A pedestrian has suffered serious injuries after being hit by a bus at a notorious city centre junction.

The pedestrian has been taken to Hull Royal Infirmary after the accident in Margaret Moxon Way, between St Stephen's Shopping Centre and Paragon Interchange.

The road has been partially closed by police after the accident at 2pm.

It happened close to where pensioner Colin Lyon was hit by a bus in November 2010. He later died from his injuries.

New traffic lights were installed at the crossing last month to prevent further accidents.

The displays tell people exactly how long they have to cross the road, counting down the time from the green man to the red man, before buses start to move.

“the accident on this road junction only happens because certain people cant wait until it is safe , simple don't cross when red light is displayed cross when it shows a green light, when i have taken my kids into the city centre my youngest sees people crossing when they should not and she says they must be thick, and thats from a 9 year old”

We all make spelling mistakes, those who pick up on them are those with nothing to say.”

If as bus is on the road, they do own it. The pedestrian owns the pavement”

“The problem here is not the bus drivers or the pedestrians; the problem is the location of the shopping centre. You can't get to it without negotiating a major crossing. People are too busy thinking about their shopping list and what shop to go to next or talking to their mate who is stood next to them – most shopping centres are in a pedestrianized area NOT on an island surrounded by shark infested waters. How many times have you nearly been taken out by a trolley in a super market because the person wielding it is not looking where they are going as they are in deep through about their shopping list? You can't blame the pedestrians for not looking where they are going. This is going to keep happening and more people will get injured or killed”

“If as Parafly says, the CCTV on the bus, shows the woman walking into the but 3/4 of the way down, it's clearly not the bus drivers fault at all.

Some people have put comments on here about drivers setting off before they have sat down, but is this the drivers fault or managements fault. Every job has targets, some are targets that are needed, and some are one we would be better without. I'm not a bus driver but I'd presume one of the targets they have is to be within a few minutes of the scheduled time at each stop. Given the amount of roadworks in Hull at the moment, the only way they have a chance of meeting these targets is to move off as soon as possible. If the management set more reasonable targets they will aleviate the problem of drivers moving off too soon either causing passengers to fall or in some cases a bus pulling out in front of a car that is overtaking a bus that is at a bus stop. I let buses out that are indicating if I can slow down or stop safely but I have had cases (not many I admit but I have had them) where I have been at least 3/4 of the way past a bus, the driver has indicated and pulled straight out, causing me to either slam my breaks on, swerve past the bus or speed up to get past it before it hits me.

Like I say, all of the above are not necessarily the drivers fault but the implamentation of unrealistic targets.

Going back to the above story, parents must take a lot of the blame, the amount of adults I see with children holding their hand and pulling them across the road when the red man is on is unbelievable. Or other adults running across the road when the red man is showing are wrong to do this, especially if their are other children at the crossing. We need to do what the Americans do and fine jay walkers.”

“Anon-Geoff...Your statement says: "So why do you open your comment saying they should have psychological tests if they have done something wrong?" So, if they have done something wrong, why shouldn't they have tests and be held responsible?

I know it may not seem relevant in this case but many bus drivers are a bit psycho when they're behind the wheel, as if they're God. How many people have been injured on the buses because the driver either hasn't parked near the kerb or has driven off as people have walked on the bus? One woman broke her nose because the driver drove off before she had stepped onto the pavement as she was getting off the bus. I was nearly thrown through the windscreen because the driver slammed his brake as I was moving towards the exit, I grabbed the post just in time which wrenched my shoulder. However, my injuries could have been much worse if I hadn't grabbed the post. These are only a few but how many more cases are there that are not reported?”

“turns out the woman walked into the side of the bus about 3/4 of the way down it and bounced off, this is shown on the CCTV on board the bus. The driver is off work now with shock... not sure whether he wants to return to work. The police and VOSA cleared the bus as fit for duty and it was back on the road today.”

“Hunnyb - As you say (eventually)... No, they can't be blamed for somebody stepping in front of their bus.

So why do you open your comment saying they should have psychological tests as if they have done something wrong?”

“I think bus drivers should be given a psycholigical test as well as a driving test because once they get behind that steering wheel the demon comes out and they think they own the roads. However, they can't be blamed for some idiot being on their mobile and just walking across the road without first looking to see if there's a bus coming, can they? I hope the lady is well soon but it has brought her to her senses where road safety is concerned.”
