“Although a traffic island in the middle of the road will never stop some people crossing on a red light or slow some bus drivers down it could make things safer.”

“I have just been a passenger this morning in a car outside what was the Royal Hotel (sorry couldn't tell you it's new name!). I took particular interest in 'people watching' crossings in this area whilst waiting for the lights to change. There was 7 people crossing when the red man was displayed between House of Fraser and the train station and a whopping 18 between the train station and St Stephens!!! The majority of these were plugged into music and gave only half a glance to traffic about to be heading in their direction! Do you all not read The Hull and East Riding Mail??!!! My question to all you 'light hoppers' would have to be, were you born like it or educated to the level?!”

“Sorry but lets not put the onus on the designers here. It's a pedestrian crossing for gawds sake.

Crossing is Red - Don't Cross.

    Cross on Green.

Don't make excuses for idiots, we don't need to wrap society up in cotton wool anymore than we currently do.”

“I crossed at this exact place on Sunday. I waited for the crossing to turn green. not everyone was so sensible. Women with prams, couples in their 50's and young lads all crossed when buses where coming.

Why was this person on the road at the point a bus could arrive or leave the depot and the lights where green for it to do so?

Having been the driver in an accident when a pedestrian stepped in front of my car I can tell you the driver will be badly affected as well as the "victim".

Wait to cross and follow the green cross code or run the risk of being hit.”

“Bus drivers know this is a bad place for accidents so why do they still persist in driving so fast? Not saying that is what this bus driver did but I still see bus drivers driving too fast, too many arrogant bus drivers if you ask me.”

“The accident was a bus leaving the interchange and was at low speed,
The women crossed while not paying attention to her souroundings but thank fully she's stable.
Brook street junction you talk about the buses having a designated lane which allows then to build up speed but you do not mention the loading bays what are often used, nor the fact the lights on brook street change green 3 seconds after paragon interchange entrance traffic lights and same go red 3 seconds before,
With hulls design of one dual carriage way out of the city traffic congestion is bad enough even on not so busy days, to build a junction what would force a bus to bare one way then another to get into the interchange times 100 busses plus an hour would cause disaster,
Wait for the green man... Look right look left look right again and cross.”

“I was one of the road safety engineers who advised the consultants (from Bristol) who designed the Ferensway / Brook Street junction during the mid 2000's. We were alarmed because at first Brook Street went straight across Ferensway at an angle which we knew from experience was a most dangerous design as it encouraged high speeds and the angle across Ferensway limited visibility, particularly for pedestrians crossing from north to south.

We suggested Brook Street bending to the right at the junction to meet Ferensway at right angles so that buses would have to slow down and turn left into Ferensway and then turn right into the Interchange; we were ignored and instead a token slight deflection across Ferensway was introduced which, together with the unobstructed bus lane in Brook Street still allowed inappropriate high speeds along Brook Street and into the Interchange.

In addition the pedestrian crossing point is around 15 metres wide which is the maximum recommended without a pedestrian refuge in the middle; the countdown display recently installed is a brave attempt to contend with a poor design but, assuming people know what it means, it still allows around 6 seconds after it reaches zero and I've seen people still starting to cross at that point. Clearly pedestrians should not be crossing stupidly when the red man is showing and buses are approaching but being stupid is not reason enough to justify injury and death.

Had our advice been taken on board then speeds would already be around 10 mph for buses entering the Interchange and if there were any collisons they would be far less serious. Merely making the speed limit 10 mph would not be supported by the police and so would not be enforced so would make no difference.

Maybe we should be asking how it is this design was approved which advantages buses and disadvantages pedestrians, against road safety advice?”

“Corrig, if they didn't want to be hit by a bus why did they ignore the easily enough seen red light informing them it wasn't 't safe to cross? Stop making excuses for these feckless people.”

“Well,Tigerpeter, the buses wouldn't need to slow down if there weren't people who arrogantly decide that rules and regulations don't apply to such important people as themselves and cross when they feel like it.
Make it like a lot of places on the continent, get hit at a non- designated crossing point or when crossing at designated place when the pedestrian light is red and you have no comeback in law and will be fined whether you are injured or not. In fact make the idiots pay for their hospital treatment as anti- smokers and drinkers are always suggesting people made ill or suffering an injury as a result of their legal and heavily taxed habits should do.”
