Planners signal Tesco take-off
Plans for a Tesco supermarket and petrol station in Hornsea look set to be given the go-ahead next week.
The scheme, earmarked for a greenfield site off Southgate, has been recommended for approval by East Riding Council planning officers.
A decision is expected on Thursday.
The eco superstore would create 270 jobs, including 170 full-time positions.
The 3.5 hectare site will include parking for 318 cars, for which there will be no time restriction, and a 20 acre wildlife corridor.
Deborah Hayeems, Tesco corporate affairs manager, said: "It's a real opportunity for residents."
She said the response from residents has been overwhelmingly positive, but shopkeepers have expressed concern the store could kill local businesses.
Simon Tudor, president of the Hornsea and District Chamber of Trade, said: "We need the jobs and we need the petrol station, but we don't need the competition for local traders."
Ms Hayeems said: "We have worked hard to hold public consultations and taking on board people's concerns before putting together a planning application.
"In regards to concerns about local trade, most of our trade will be from the larger food stores, so we will be keeping the residents in the town shopping.
"The town centre is only a five minute walk from Tesco, so shoppers will be able to walk to local traders after visiting the superstore."
There is no reason for local businesses to be concerned."
Concern has also been raised about increased traffic.
A new roundabout will be created in Hull Road to improve traffic flow to the site, as well cycle lanes and pedestrian access being incorporated into the plans.
The store will also include environmentally-friendly features, including onsite technology to heat and power the store, rainwater harvesting and roof vents and panels to ventilate and light the store naturally.
If planning is approved, Tesco hope the store will be open by Christmas 2010.

“The level of interest in this story is amazing isn't it?, NOT!
Reason? the residents have no time to express opinions, they spend every waking hour on the road, if they are not going to work they travelling to beverley, bridlington or Hull to get food and fuel.
But I see the usual wally's with a vested interest (shopkeepers) are still prone to blaming the world for their own inability. When will they learn, that with just a couple of notable exceptions the inhabitants don't want their offerings? Apart from George Hampsons electrical, an eatery or two, the Countdown store and Londis, the rest will not be missed. For years they failed to provide decent service to the residents, understocked and overpriced and disinterested being the norm.
By way of example, I recently ran out of my supermarket (Tesco) golden delicious apples, and in desperation paid the extra 20p per kg to purchase some form a local fruit & veg shop, they were utter dross, unfit for human consumption IMHO being so under ripe they needed at least week to soften enough to eat, and were still rubbish, bring it on Tesco and don't let the local shops trouble your conscience, excluding the afore mentioned I cannot think of any who deserve sympathy.”

“So that's it, Hornsea moves into the 20th century, and I know it's the 21st century but for Hornsea it's progress.
All we need now is for co-op to close and Lidl to move in, made up then! If the rumour that Wilkinsons is also going to open in Hornsea that would make 2009 Hornsea's most memorable year ever, and that's without factoring in the filling station!
And if that's not enough there's jobs for upto 270 people, all you doubters who opposed the plans please queue at the promenade for the mass walk into the sea on Sunday morning 10am, well, chance would be a fine thing.
Seriously, this could be the end of life as my grandfather new it!”

“I forgot to mention, hopefully the new store and petrol station will finish the robbers at the Co-op and Leven petrol station, not to mention the garage at Sigglesthorne, pirates.”

“if anyone has doubts about this development, ask the residents. That is NOT always the same thing as asking the councillors who are SUPPOSED to serve our interests, witness the recent fiasco with MP's expenses, very much self interest on the rampage.
Some local shop owners will whinge as per usual, the one's who remain of course, as many have gone bust despite the lack of development like this which they previously prevented. Some local shop owners (you know who you are) even got themselves elected to the council, so they could have two platforms to moan from, and despite no developments thanks to their whinging are now selling up anyway
The people of Hornsea need this store, they currently have two choices, drive miles to Hull, Beverly or Bridlington to shop and for petrol, or shop in the local Co-operative, who's pricing structure frequently reflects their monopoly.
A local Tesco (would have preferred Asda) will create competion and save locals a considerable amount on their budgets. No £10 petrol cost to drive to Hell, sorry, Hull and back plus the benefit of local fuel availability, for a town of several thousand inhabitants with no local fuel source. Hornsea has virually doubled in size and population over the last 20 years, but services have gone backwards. It's time, it's what over 85% of the inhabitants want, why are we waiting?”

“If they do improve the traffic flow with better traffic lights etc, lets hope they make a better job that they did in Beverley.”

“I like the mix of hectares and acres in this report it really makes things clear.
Tesco are taking over 28 acres of greenfield and they are doing it to make money not to improve the environment nor provide employment; they simply want to take your money.
If you want to give your money to Tesco fair enough but this is a deal with the devil and you know it.
It seems the Tesco dollar has touched even ERYC's planning department perhaps they pay better than Costa! And yes that does mean what you think it means.”
