Council planning officers are standing by their views that a proposed new £18 million development by Tesco in west Hull should be rejected.

If given the go-ahead, the retail giant says the proposed scheme will create more than 300 new jobs.

So far, the company has twice withdrawn its application to transform a currently derelict site at the junction of Anlaby Road and Boothferry Road from the city council's planning committee agenda at the last minute.

Now the scheme is finally back on the agenda for next Tuesday's committee meeting.

But council planners are once again recommending refusal, arguing that allowing the development would threaten the future of nearby local shops and businesses in Anlaby Road and Hessle Road.

In addition, they also claim the supermarket giant has failed to demonstrate how it proposes to deal with extra traffic congestion in the immediate area should the scheme get the go-ahead.

As the Mail has previously reported, the issue has split opinion in the area.

“I live yards from where this Tesco will be built and can honestly say for the time I have lived here have never walked down anlaby road to do any shopping. Tesco can only be an improvement, and also as netto is being taken over by walmart, ie Asda, it can only be a good thing for the area, not to mention the jobs created.”

“If the local shops would be wiped out by a new Tescos, how come they have survived the Tesco and Sainsbury's Locals?”

“Bill, you're right- many people do exactly as you described. But lots of people don't and are happy to use independent shops if they are good enough.

Let's face it, Hull must be at near-saturation point for large supermarkets. Surely there is no one who would shop in any new superstore who doesn't already do the bulk of their shopping at another supermarket? Yet many, many independents and smaller shops are surviving now.”

“So why do Aldi, Lidl and Netto often set up opposite other supermarkets then, Bill? Or the smaller shops near Waitrose, for example, shops in other shopping parks right next to Supermarkets- how do they manage to be packed all the time?

Anlaby Road is the ar*e end of Hull- it can't possibly get any worse. The takeaways will stay, the specialist shops will stay and as for the rest, of which there aren't that many, I agree no one will miss them.”
