Mr Godber has a long and distinguished link with the city after becoming Hull Truck Theatre's director in 1984.
He spent more than 20 years with the theatre, producing more than 40 original plays and adaptations – including the Olivier-winning Up 'N' Under, Bouncers, Teechers and Funny Turns.
He has won numerous awards for his plays, including the Lawrence Olivier award and seven Los Angeles Critics' Circle Awards.
Mr Godber told the Mail his heart has always been in Hull.
He said: "I was asked to be patron for a couple of other children's universities through my work and because my plays are studied in schools at GCSE and A-Level.
"But it did not feel right accepting being a patron to any other one than here, where I live."
It was an accidental meeting between Mr Godber and John Buttrick, Hull Children's University director, that eventually saw him accept an invitation to be patron.
"I bumped into John," said Mr Godber.
"It was purely by accident and I told him I had been asked to be a patron of the children's university elsewhere. I said if he were to make an approach then I would turn them down. John said to me 'I'm making an approach' and I accepted."
