A TERRIFIED railway signalman called police after youths threatened to stab him.

They threw missiles at the signal box next to Beverley train station after the signalmen asked them to stop causing a disturbance on the adjacent level crossing.

British Transport Police want to trace the culprits and talk to anyone who was near the crossing between Grovehill Road and Trinity Lane at the time.

Investigating officer PC Cheryl Scrase said: "The signalman spotted a group of eight youths causing a disturbance by the crossing, before one of them threw a missile at the signal box.

"When the signalman told them to move away they became threatening, taunting him, before climbing onto the palisade gate, trying to get to the signal box.

"The youth who had thrown the object threatened to stab the signalman and, in an attempt to climb into the signal box, damaged the fencing."

The 43-year-old signalman, from Hull, called police, but the youths fled.

The disturbance happened at about 9pm on Monday, August 23.

The youth who made threats has been described as white, of average build and 5ft 8in to 5ft 10in in height. He wore a light T-shirt and a grey baseball cap.

Another of the suspects was 5ft 7in, white with a big build and a Hull accent.

He wore black track suit bottoms, a black coat and a baseball cap.

A third was white, slim, about 6ft 3in and wore dark, three-quarter length track suit bottoms, a dark hooded top, trainers, and a scarf around his mouth.

Witnesses are being asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40.
