MORE than 150 motorcyclists have been caught speeding in a campaign to reduce the death toll on country roads.

Police have been using hidden speed cameras to catch motorcyclists exceeding the speed limit on the East Riding's roads over the summer.

Officers working on Operation Achilles have caught 169 bikers speeding, including one travelling at more than 120mph on a road with a 60mph limit.

Three bikers have already been killed on the county's roads this year, and 17 seriously injured.

PC Simon Carlisle, Humberside Police's casualty reduction officer for the East Riding, said: "Motorcyclists are vulnerable and if they are travelling at excess speeds, particularly down a line of traffic, they become even more vulnerable.

"When you look at the fact motorcyclists make up about 2 per cent of all road users, this is a high number we have caught."

Officers have been using an unmarked camper van to catch those over the limit, as well as an unmarked high-powered motorcycle.

Of the bikers caught during this year's campaign, 28 have been fined and given penalty points and 46 have been sent summonses to appear in court.

A further 52 have been referred to speed awareness courses.

PC Carlisle said 43 drivers who were caught driving carelessly and speeding have been referred to the force's Ride course.

He said: "We have been carrying out a lot of enforcement work as part of Operation Achilles, using an unmarked high-performance motorcycle to gather evidence of bad riding.

"We have only been prosecuting the motorcyclists travelling at really high speeds.

"The vehicles are not there to entrap people, they are there to catch the high-end speeders.

"We have also been carrying out high-visibility patrols, particularly on our core motorcycling routes – the ones where the most serious crashes have happened.

"The best thing we can do is to educate people.

"The main issues we have with motorcyclists are speeding and rider behaviour, which is why we use the courses.

"The number of motorcyclists killed or seriously injured is lower than last year, but we still have a few months left."

Officers working on the operation, which runs every summer, have also given out 13 fines for other offences and given eight riders vehicle defect forms, which mean any defects must be repaired.

Jolyon Lawson, chair of the East Yorkshire Motorcycle Action Group, said bad riders are in the minority.

He said: "The amount of motorcyclists they have caught sounds like a lot, but I wonder how many cars have been caught in that time.

"There is no question there are a small percentage of motorcyclists who abuse the roads, but that is also true of motorists.

"Motorcyclists are very vulnerable and it can be very dangerous if you have an accident.

"We all hate to see motorcycle accidents as it does remind you of your own mortality."

I accept your general point that Bikers tend to come of worse than other motorists but what happens when a motorcyclist hits a pedestrian or cyclist, dont know the figures but it does happen. They are road users as well.

The noise that modern motorbikes make is horrendous especially when accelerating and travelling at high speed, if they rode more slowly that nuisance would be reduced as well. On the plus side motorcyclists tend to make excellent organ donors.”

“I see no motorcyclists have quoted the phrase "one doing more than 120 mph".

The message is quite simple .... "if you ride legally it doesn't matter what your mode of transport is ..... you have nothing to fear"”

“I am a motor cyclist but the way people ride on the roads around my village is disgusting, most of the riders are un skilled and inexperienced to ride like they do and take to many risks, you ride like this on a track day and if you come off you may walk away and not going to injure anyone else. There is a time and a place to ride like this and it certainly is not on the road so stop endangering peoples lives.”

“PerryFarrelll bikers do not only hurt themselves. Imagine two motorcyles riding the wrong way to the traffic at over 90 miles an hour. One of the said motorcycles going up your car bonnet and onto your legs and doing other damage to your body as well and to the other people in the car. The second motorcycle just missed a car with a family of four in it and two of these passengers were children. I wonder if you would still feel the same way about motorcyclists if they had caused an accident involving you and your family. No you will not. The police are not out to persecute the cyclists or car owners they are doing their job in making the road safer for us all.”

“I know this article is focusing on motorcyclists speed on country roads, but the amount of times I have been stuck in stationary traffic moving very very slowly near junctions, turns and the like, and motorcyclists speed past you narrowly missing your mirrors, and they zoom in the oncoming traffic lane so the oncoming cars/lorries have to swerve to move out the way of them. Idiots I say.”

""The vehicles are not there to entrap people", quite a contradiction considering an unmarked camper van & an unmarked high speed motorcycle are used!!??.

Like Mr Namen said it is a total contradiction. When was the last time that a motorcyclist killed another road user and was at fault - it almost never happens. Leaver bikers alone (they only hurt themselves) and concentrate on dangerous car drivers who speed around in 2 ton killing machines.”

“The number of cars caught will be a lot higher than motorcyclists caught as bikers only account for 2% of motorists; however this demonstrates that proportionally, motorcyclists are much worse drivers/riders.

Thus is due to the fact that the vast majority of bikers are reckless, irresponsible, selfish morons who only care about getting in front and going as fast as possible. Tailgating, riding in blind spots, overtaking when not safe to do so, cutting in in queues of traffic, cornering that fast that they're lent over into the oncoming lane (often with pillion passengers) and being general w**k**s. I'm on the road a lot and for every single sane biker there are at least 20 nutcases who are just crying out to be seriously injured or worse. I'm amazed more don't die to be honest.

Biker's are worse than old people and wagon drivers put together.

    There's no defence/excuse so don't even try.”
