A driver failed to stop after running over a dog in the middle of the road.

The Staffordshire dog had spotted two other dogs on the other side of the road when it ran out into the path of the car at about 9.10pm on Tuesday outside Paddock Court in Scarborough Road, Driffield.

The owner had been walking the dog off its lead near the traffic lights at the Bridlington Road junction when it was hit by a silver or light blue small hatchback car.

The driver didn't stop and drove off through the traffic lights, turning left into Bridlington Road.

“I lost faith in the police a long time ago, if they're not racing around in their cars they're sitting in laybys waiting for unsuspecting motorists.

In your case, YorkieTed, the police were probably in their car eating their cream buns, neither hell nor high water can prise them away, let alone a dead dog.”

“I once hit a dog at 6.30pm on Holderness Road. I phoned the police straight away as the dog was laid in the middle of Holderness road bringing rush hour traffic to a standstill. The police said "someone will be along shortly" but in the meantime we tracked down the dogs owner, there was a vets within 20 metres of the incident who took the dog in, I waited over an hour at the vets, I could see the road and my car from where I was, but no police turned up. They rang me about two hours later and just told me to bring my licence and documents into Bransholme police station. Obviously got more time to investigate dog RTA's in Driffield.”

“It doesn't matter what breed or well trained a dog is, it should ALWAYS be on a lead near traffic, night or day. It only takes a second for a dog to run off when it sees another dog or a cat and it can create chaos on the road. If this should happen and a car is damaged, then it's the dog owner's responsibility to pay for any damage caused.

I keep my dog on the lead at all times near traffic and only let him free within the security of the park even though he's well behaved. I would hate to think my dog had caused an accident or someone to be hurt (or killed) that's aside from the fact that I wouldn't want my dog hurt either.”

“Let's hope that the hatchback didn't suffer any significant damage. If it did, the dog owner should expect a hefty repair bill.”

“ALL Dogs should be on a lead in the street, who knows what a dogs thinking.
I let my dog off her lead in Pearson park, that's because its an open space where there is hardly anyone around! I trust my dog BUT ID NEVER let her off her lead in the street, all she needs do do is spot another dog or a cat or similar on the other side of the road and bang she could be off!
I consider my dog to be well trained and still will not ever let her off the lead in the street, besides which she's been attacked many times now in the street by dogs who arn't on a lead, at least if my dogs on lead then i've got restraint over her. People need to get a grip and stop walking dogs in the street with no lead, you never know what they could do.

Fine the owner and tell them not to have been so stupid for walking her dog without a lead on next to a road!! How is the dog supposed to know not to run out in front of cars... you can train them all you want but that doesn't mean they'll behave all the time!!”

“adovhull states ""Really don't see how this is a police matter. I would have thought it was a civil matter."" - By law, if you hit any of the following animals, it is a reportable matter - sheep, horse, ass, mule, pig, ox, goat, and dog".”

“i agree that dogs should be kept on a lead near roads as you cannot always second guess what they will do but to suggest that because its a staffie it should be on a lead is ridiculous. i have a staffie and she is the softest and most loving dog. any dog can be dangerous in the wrong hands so dont just have a go at staffies.”
