Shops in west Hull are facing losses of hundreds of pounds following a power cut.

The electricity supply to numerous businesses on Princes Avenue was lost for up to 12 hours in some cases.

Initially, it was believed 220 properties were affected but a spokeswoman for Yorkshire Electricity Distribution (YEDL) today said 77 customers were hit.

Electricity was restored by 5.45pm yesterday evening.

The power cut happened when Hull City Council contractors damaged a power cable while carrying out roadworks at the junction of Spring Bank West and Princes Avenue.

They were putting up guard rails at the time.

YEDL switched off the power supply in the HU5 area for safety reasons while the cable was repaired.

Phil Fisher, owner of Haagensens Bakery, was left out of pocket.

He said: "We probably lost hundreds of pounds due to loss of custom and having to throw out batons we couldn't bake.

"I contacted the electricity company, but they couldn't tell me who was at fault.

"They told me to ask in writing."

Premises in Spring Bank West, Anlaby Road, Princes Avenue, Thoresby Street, Welbeck Street, Sherwood Avenue and Chatsworth Avenue were all affected.
