RECENTLY an off-duty police officer saw an ambulance at a property close to her home and went to see if she could offer any assistance.

She found the crew treating an elderly gentleman who had collapsed and his wife in a distressed state.

The officer brought in my wife to sit with the lady in another room and quietly liaised between them all until, unfortunately, the lady had to be told that, despite valiant efforts by the medics, her husband had died.

While remaining very kind and comforting, the officer then assumed a professional role. A little later, she had to leave to go on night duty.

Another officer had arrived in order to conduct the legally required procedure required in such circumstances. This he did with the utmost tact and kindness and is to be commended for his compassionate manner.

At a time when the police seem to receive nothing but criticism and bad publicity, it is pleasing to be able to praise and thank two officers for their kind, and sympathetic handling of a difficult situation.

Thanks and praise must also be given to the ambulance crew for their very determined efforts and kindness.
