Protesters march against Grimston dog farm
ANIMAL rights campaigners marched through Hull to protest against plans to breed beagles for experiments.
Wearing blood-smeared suits and painted beagle masks, dozens of protesters joined the march through the city centre on Saturday.
They were campaigning against B&K Universal's application to breed up to 2,000 dogs in Grimston. The dogs would then be used for animal experiments.
Beagle owner Craig Kelly, 25, of Kingswood, attended the rally in Queens Gardens with his pets Shiloh and Ruby.
"The reason beagles get tested on is because they would sell their soul for a treat," he said.
"They are really trusting of humans and are lovely, loyal pets. It is a laugh a minute in our house with them around.
"The only way I can describe the plans for Grimston is inhumane.
"I don't think we need to test on them anymore. It has been done enough in the past. There are scientific alternatives now."
The application to extend the facility was refused permission by East Riding Council in June, but, after a successful appeal by the company, the decision will now fall to Communities Secretary Eric Pickles.
He is due to reveal the outcome on March 8.
Deborah Minns, one of the organisers of the local campaign against the expansion, said: "People don't want this on their doorstep.
"We don't want East Yorkshire to be known for having the biggest beagle facility in the UK.
"It is also about putting ourselves in another species' shoes. What gives us the right, as humans, to treat them in that way?"
The application was refused by East Riding Council over concerns about traffic issues, with councillors saying they could not consider moral issues.
Almost 30,000 people have signed a petition organised by the British Union For The Abolition Of Vivisection (BUAV), calling for the plan to be refused on moral grounds.
As previously reported, comedian Ricky Gervais has also thrown his support behind the campaign.
However, the company has said properly monitored animal experiments are permitted in the UK because they are vital for medical research.

“Well it seems the government made the right decision, refused application, mmmmm Glaxo now in the spot light, 128 million tax avoidance, WAKE Up, There still use animals to keep business moving, and it will carry on for ever because nothing will come of using animals and thats good for them because people will still be living in hope and donating, pharmas and charities praying on the vulnerable, this is nothing to do with your health, they dont care, YOUR LIFE IS IN YOUR HANDS AND NO ONE ELSES, research, and prevent, and check out cutting edge technology in research relevant to humans, personalised medicine, and help your selves too, research, prevent and do the exact opposite of what advertising tells you to do and think,”

Still avoiding answering any of my comments regarding the actual subject of this news forum I see.
Wow - a university education! How impressive. Shame you ended up in a job where you have to get up at 5am to go to work.”

“Oh, and sorry about the "old chap" thing - but I call my peers that, so I don't deem it to be any more than friendly, but I suppose you can take offence at anything these days!”

“Well, I suppose the benefit of working very hard, together with a private school education and a degree from a real university mean that I have been able to choose a career where I can have breaks at MY leisure and even eat a meal occasionally!!”

"Anyway, I think I have had enough of you for now."
Well that is an easier option than actually addressing any of my points I suppose.”

No not while I am at work. My job requires 100% effort.
And please stop calling me 'old chap'. I might not be in the first flush of youth, but I'm certainly not a 'chap'.
People like you make too many assumptions.”

How would you feel if a loved one had gone to see the doctor with diarrhea, been prescribed Clioquinol and was one of the 30,000 people blinded, paralysed or killed by it? Or if a loved one with heart problems was given two years to live, was given Manoplax and was dead in a month?”

Well I suspect that he hasn't pulled you up because you and him are arguing on the same side.
As for the reasons you have just given, again that's what you would say isn't it?”
