Why visit? After finishing work late one night, we stopped at Lambwath for a quick and easy mid-week meal. The mid-week prices are really good value.
What's on the menu? Obviously the main thing is the carvery, but there was also a good selection of other dishes for vegetarians or those who did not want a carvery, including Quorn lasagne (£3.89) and roast tomato and marscapone bake £4.65. For vegetarians, there was also the option of a meat-free carvery (£3.49).
We opted for the carvery (£3.89 or £3.49 for under-10s – prices go up on a Sunday to £6.99, kids £3.89) – and were surprised to see steak pie on there, too – usually it's just a choice of meat.
The meats on offer were turkey, beef and gammon, or a bit of all three if you wanted. You also get a Yorkshire pudding (or two if you ask nicely) and then help yourself to the veg and gravy.
If you have a really large appetite, you can opt for the ultimate kingsize carvery – more meat, a pork sausage, a bigger Yorkshire pudding and an even larger plate for £1.50 extra.
I must say we were really impressed with the selection of vegetables, which on the night we visited included onions, green beans, cabbage, mashed potatoes, carrots, roast potatoes, stuffing and cauliflower cheese. It is all you can eat on the veg, but I would be amazed if anyone went back for more.
We ended up with full plates, but polished everything off. The meats were really succulent, not at all dry and the veg was fresh and tasty.
Puddings included all-you-can-eat ice cream (£1.99, toppings 30p), chocolate fudge sensation (£3.20 or £4.65 to share) and chocolate brownies (£2.95), among others. We were far too full to indulge though.
At the bar The usual variety of alcoholic drinks, hot drinks and non-alcoholic drinks. A glass of wine starts at £2.65, draft lager starts at £2.30 and it was £1.75 for a medium Pepsi. We opted for a pint of fresh orange and lemonade and were amazed that the price for each one came to £2.90 – more expensive than a pint of beer.
Ambience We arrived after 8pm, so it was fairly quiet. There was music playing in the background, but it wasn't too loud.
Customer service We did wait a few minutes for the chef to serve our carvery because he was in the kitchen and didn't realise we were there until the waitress alerted him. It was not a problem, but maybe a bell would be an idea.
The punters There was a mix of people dining, from families with very small children to a group of more mature ladies and various family groups. It's perfect for people with children because of the relaxed atmosphere.
Worth going back? Definitely.
