Why visit? A traditional village pub serving quality home cooked produce.

What's on the menu? We visited on a Sunday lunchtime when there was a satisfying number of options available. There was a choice of three roasts – beef, pork and chicken, a couple of starters – soup and paté, and a selection of puddings, including treacle sponge and chocolate fudge cake.

I was pleased with these options as for me, there is nothing better on a Sunday than a proper roast dinner, so any other choices would have been wasted on me.

I plumped for the pork dinner (£6.50) while my husband, brother and son all decided on the beef (£8 each and £4 for a child's portion).

We arrived late on in the service – no doubt after the rush – and easily found somewhere to sit in the comfortable bar area while we waited for our food.

When it arrived, we couldn't believe the size of the portions. Each of us had large slices of beautifully tender carved meat and a giant Yorkshire pudding on our plates. We then had huge dishes of roast potatoes, boiled potatoes, parsnips, vegetables, including cauliflower, carrots, sweetcorn and peppers and a large jug of gravy.

Everything was extremely tasty – especially the meat – although it would have been nice if the cauliflower had been served with a cheese sauce as it was a little dry without it.

It was also all piping hot and nicely presented. The only drawback was that we were far too full to enjoy a pudding, although the ones I spied being served at a neighbouring table looked delicious.

A larger menu is available during the week offering pub favourites such as lasagne, fish and chips and steak pie, which I have also been lucky enough to sample and can again vouch for the quality and value.

At the bar A wide range of the usual beers and lagers, including some from local breweries such as Great Newsome. Also a selection of wines, spirits and soft drinks.

Ambience Homely and comfortable – the pub has recently been refurbished to a high standard by the current owners.

Customer service Excellent. Although there appeared to be just one member of staff running both the bar and taking food orders, service was friendly, quick and efficient.

The punters Families enjoying lunch, as well as locals popping in for a pint.

Worth going back? Definitely. The total bill came to just £35.20, which included a couple of rounds of drinks which we thought was excellent value. The Falcon has also recently started offering a "dine and drink" special on Tuesdays, for £6.50 or £3 for children, which I will certainly try and they are planning to revamp their menu very soon.
