Pupils win award for anti-bullying efforts
Pupils from a city school have been given a prestigious national award for their work to stamp out bullying.
Teenagers from St Mary's College in Cranbrook Avenue, north Hull, have created a chat room for pupils wanting to talk about bullying or other issues.
The pupils' hard work and dedication have now been recognised with the Princess Diana Anti-Bullying Excellence Award.
Two pupils sit in the chat room each day over lunchtime to speak to any pupils who want to talk.
If a student does not want to go into the chat room a special email account has been set up and there is also a text service.
Janelle Naylor, mentor co-ordinator and RE teacher at the school said: "We have been running a mentoring programme for nine years and this year I thought 'why don't they take the responsibility for anti-bullying'.
"They call themselves anti bullying stewards.
"They meet once a week to put forward ideas. The chat room is a room the school has given us and the students have handed out leaflets and people can go there and talk."
Year Nine pupils are invited to apply to be mentors. They will then be interviewed and, if successful, go attend a mentoring course.

“I think its disgusting. I cant understand how anyone actually has the time to sit around, critisising good hearted, honest people that work extremeley hard to make childrens lives better. I mean; dont you have a job?”

“Jamie jamie jamie...... why do you say things like that?
Is it because you are being bullied?
Shame you dont like anti bullying mentors.
They could help you.
I think you need help.”

“I am a mentor at St Mary's school and am astonished at your ignorance. Perhaps you would benefit from having a mentor yourself.”

“Jamie, i would like you to explain your comment, because you cannot just say something like that without backing it up. Why don't you put yourself in the shoes of a child who is having to endure this horrid and lonely time. We are trying to encourage victims to open up and feel confident about themselves and it's people like you who make them feel victimised and alone. How can someone know that people are there for them when they look at comments like that. I personally know J.Naylor and have seen the hard work and passion she has put into this project and i would challenge you to show the same commitment towards something as positive as this project. I am intrested in how you are going to back your claim up ? PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!!!”

“WELL, JAMIE FROM HULL, YOU ARE BEING VERY DISRESPECTFUL TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SCHOOLS AND THE COMMUNITY! FURTHERMORE, YOU AREN'T BEING SUPPORTIVE OF THE FACT THAT SCHOOLS DON'T WANT BULLIES IN THE SCHOOL. YOU JUST WANT TO GIVE HULL A BAD REPUTATION AND A BAD NAME FOR DOING A GOOD THING. THEREFORE, YOU ARE JUST A RUDE, ARRAGENT PERSON WHO HASN'T GOT ANY RESPECT FOR OTHERS, OR THEIR COMMUNITIES OR THEIR REPUTAION!!!”

“I think this is totally disrespectful and really really rude. This students at St Mary's have obviously worked very very hard for what they have acheived. I would like to see you achieve something as great as they have. They have really helped a lot of people in the school's life and have made the school a fantastic place to go. Bullying is a severe problem in the uk and can and will ruin many lives. I feel strongly about this and you are being really mean to this students. If you have nothing better to do with your life then offend young people i feel personally sorry for you.”

“this is disrespectful and goes against all the hard work that the kids put in. YEAH! We don't understand why you waste your time slating other peolpes hard work. I'm sure you wouldn't want to endure being bullied yourself. The comment you posted does not even make sense. Personally I feel sorry for you as you obviously have nothing better tp do with your life.”

“I agree with you susan. I don't see the point in you writing that comment, Jamie. You're the bully! At least St. Mary's is making Hull a better place to live!!!”
