MOTORCYCLISTS getting thrown from their bikes, car tyres bursting and other vehicles being written off.

These are just some of the pothole nightmares motorists across East Yorkshire have been suffering.

The Mail recently asked readers to get in touch to report problem potholes and we were inundated with responses.

Drivers have claimed the roads are the worst they have ever been, following the damage caused by show and ice.

Ann Whiley, of Lomond Road, off Spring Bank West, Hull, said she can regularly hear loud bangs outside her house when cars hit a bump in the road.

The 74-year-old said: "There are two tracks of potholes running down the road on either side. They are awful.

"There are hundreds of them by the feel of it when you drive down.

"I haven't reported it to the council as they don't seem to have even done the bigger main roads yet."

Mrs Whiley said in some patches it is impossible to avoid the potholes and she often sees cars hitting them.

"It is horrible," she said.

"When I am at home I can hear cars going over them.

"I am not exaggerating. One of the deepest potholes has to be three inches, going on for four.

"We pay road tax, so I don't know why more isn't being done."

Geoff Gorman was thrown from his motorbike when he hit a pothole earlier this week.

The 59-year-old was riding down Anlaby Road, towards the city centre at about 5.10pm on Monday when he struck a particularly bad pothole near the junction with Walton Street.

Mr Gorman, who works as a porter at Castle Hill Hospital, said: "I reckon the pothole must have been about nine inches square.

"I hit it and it took me right off my bike.

"I just didn't see it in time and couldn't avoid it."

Although uninjured, Mr Gorman said he was a shaken by the experience and was glad there wasn't another vehicle behind him. He said: "If there had been a car behind me I would probably have been phoning the Mail from a hospital bed, or not at all.

"I've seen lots of potholes when I've been riding around.

"At one time you would see maintenance people out putting new road surfaces down, but I haven't seen that happening for two or three years.

"There are a lot of bad potholes around at this time of year, especially after all the bad weather we had."

Rachel Peterson was driving to her home in Campion Avenue, west Hull, when she struck a pothole on Sunday evening.

The impact was so bad, both tyres on the passenger side of her Corsa burst.

The offending pothole was in the southbound carriageway in Pickering Road.

The 24-year-old had been travelling from Clough Road in north Hull at about 6.30pm, when it happened.

She said: "I normally try to avoid potholes as much as possible, but because it was dark they were hard to see.

"I heard the tyres pop. I hoped it was only one.

"I struggled home because my house was just round the corner, but when I got home I realised both had gone.

"It has cost me £120 to get them both repaired so I am writing to Hull City Council about it."

A 53-year-old cyclist also contacted the Mail after she wrote off her electric bike on a pothole on Sunday.

The woman, who did not wish to be named, was travelling along Barnstaple Road in Bransholme when she hit a big dip.

The bike wobbled and her battery fell out and smashed.

As the casing for it smashed as well, the woman believes the bike is now a write-off.

She said: "I am glad there wasn't a car behind me, otherwise I would have been a goner.

"I went down one pothole and lost my battery, then I hit another.

"The bike wobbled, but I was lucky enough not to come off it.

"My bike is a wreck though and because the casing and the battery smashed it is probably beyond repair."

Leslie Lamb phoned to report a large pothole in Park Street, Hull city centre, near the junction with Grey Street.

Mr Lamb, 70, said: "I drove down there on Monday and only just missed it myself, but I saw other cars bumping down it.

"I think it was a good foot across, the same in width and about six inches deep.

"The council has done a good job filling the other potholes in Park Street, but that one is really bad.

"It wants getting seen to."

Mike Ross, the portfolio holder for customer and neighbourhood services for Hull City Council, said: "We continue to have teams out every day fixing potholes.

"We have sought to make the process more efficient by investing in machines that make it quicker to fix them.

"We encourage our residents to report potholes through our website, at one of our customer service centres or via our 01482 300300 contact centre so we can then log them, send out an inspector, prioritise them and feedback when they have been fixed.

"Thanks to those residents who have been reporting them.

"We are updating which streets we are working on via our winter feed on our website."

“Councillor Ross actually speaks was it from a pot hole he has been hiding in.

Pot holes in Hull means we all must pay the garages for repairs.

Looking forward to another round of Pot Hole Golf Course driving this weekend along Shannon Road. Is it true pot holes in Labour areas are at the back of the cue can highways provide stats ?.”

“I was driving along First Lane, Hessle, today, to find that the entrances to every road coming off it had had a wide strip of green tarmac laid. Why? Further on the workers were laying some more. In these days of council cuts where prioritising of spending is critical why is it necessary to put strip of green at the entrance to roads. They have never had it before. Yet again we have East Riding council management justifying their existence and spending money totally unnecessarily when the money could have been spend on repairing roads damaged by the recent cold weather.”

“I'm sure they won't pay out for repairs caused by potholes any more than they will pay for repairs caused by THEIR speed humps which in essence are only potholes upside down.. At least potholes are caused by an outside influence whilst the humps are actually laid by the stupid councils. I'm not sure how they can wriggle out of paying for repairs caused by themselves and their shortsighted stupidity but they certainly manage it.
Now lots of the humps have potholes themselves making driving even worse. Forced by the road layouts to use only a certain 'track' the roads are getting worse and the damage to cars more serious. Get rid of the white lines and the junk and street furniture on and beside the roads and lets get back to using our roads properly”

“Thats nowt, the drain covers have been missing in the layby's on Beverley bypass for months.

All the council have done is bent some traffic cones and stuck them in the top to try and highlight the issue.

One was missing as I found out one dark night when I pulled into the layby to use my phone.

There was a large bang as one of my wheels dropped down the first drain which had no cone in it.

Nearly fell down the thing as I went round the car to see what had happened.

How can the council just leave the drains like that and not at least make some sort of temporary repair is beyond me.”
