Green light for multi-million pound East Yorkshire flood defences

MULTI-million pound flood defences in East Yorkshire have been given the green light by the Government.

The schemes, which include a £22m project in Cottingham, are aimed at preventing a repeat of the widespread flooding in 2007.

The money has been secured as part of a drive to protect more than 164,000 homes across the country.

In total, 93 defences are being supported by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said: "The 93 schemes given the green light today will bring huge relief to tens of thousands of residents and businesses that have lived with the fear of flood waters hitting their doors.

"They can get on with their daily lives and work knowing there are well-built defences."

He hopes the defences will create jobs and give the economy a boost by making at-risk areas a better investment.

Mr Paterson said: "This is also a message to the business community.

"By building defences that will unlock the economic potential of once-blighted land we are saying to them it is safe to come and set up.

"This will create jobs and grow the economy so we can compete in the global race."

Another £14m has been earmarked for Willerby and Derringham defences.

Further construction work will protect Withernsea and Leconfield.

The seaside town is to get a sea wall along the South Promenade and groynes to reduce beach erosion, at a total cost of £1.6m. Leconfield will get a £280,000 flood alleviation scheme.

An East Riding Council spokesman said the Government's announcement confirmed funding for schemes already in the pipeline.

They will all have to secure planning permission before work can begin.

The inland defences are being built as a response to the 2007 floods which devastated homes across East Yorkshire.

In Hull, an estimated 35,000 people in 17,000 homes were affected.

The flooding led to the evacuation of more than 10,000 houses.

Hull City Council estimated repair costs at £200m.

Some defences have already gone up across the region.

Two years ago in Cottingham, £450,000 was spent on lagoons alongside Eppleworth Road.

They are designed to store about four million gallons of water from higher ground.

Environment Agency chairman Lord Smith said: "Our priority is to do as much as we can with every pound of funding. We now expect to improve protection for 165,000 properties by 2015.

"With one in six homes in England at risk of flooding, we would also encourage people to take their own steps to prepare for flooding, for example by signing up to the Environment Agency's free flood warning service."
