Managers at Hull Royal Infirmary have been told to take action after inspectors found a unit was not meeting standards.

The Care Quality Commission visited the hospital’s acute assessment unit earlier this year and found the standards of care and welfare of people who use services were not being met.

A trust spokesman said immediate action was being taken.

“This is one of the busest units in the Trust after A&E. Staffing it at an all time time low with nursing and medical staff alike reduced to tears at times due to their inability to cope.

Who do they complain to? The very people that decide on the staffing cuts.

It is not about an appropriate distribution of staff to meet the need; it is purely to cut costs. Redistribute the highly qualified nursing staff based within out patient clinics into the areas of most need.

Don't feel sorry for the nurses; complain to the managers. Use the PALS system. The trouble is people don't complain, people whine and mumble.

AAU is like a field hospital. No care. Just treat and pass on. And now even that is failing. It is buckling under the pressure and the Trust Managers know about it; and have done for years.

I know for a fact most people would not cope with the stress of one shift in AAU. Nurses come back and do that day in day out. It is not about the 13 hour back to back shifts it is about the content and expectation of those shifts.

You do what you can with what you've got.”
