A Russian bomber on a spying mission and an alien craft.

These are just two of the theories behind a strange noise heard in the middle of the night.

As first reported on the Mail's website yesterday, the noise – described as a "humming" noise – was heard at about 2am on Thursday.

It was heard across a wide expanse of East Yorkshire, with one report from as far away as Doncaster.

Mark Holland, of Hedon, where the noise appears to have been loudest, said he was left baffled.

Mr Holland, 49, said: "I was taking my wife, Shirley, to Manchester Airport to catch a flight to Benidorm.

"Just as she asked me to load a suitcase into the car we heard it.

"It was absolutely unreal. We 've never heard anything like it.

"We are on the flight path to Humberside Airport and get planes passing overheard, but never at that time and that low.

"Although it was cloudy, it was fairly bright. For the noise to be that loud, you would have expected to have seen whatever it was."

Enquiries by the Mail have drawn a blank with no-one able to confirm the source of the noise.

A spokeswoman for Humberside Airport at Kirmington in North Lincolnshire, said: "At 2am the airport is closed. The last flight in or out was 10.45pm."

According to BP at Saltend, no work out of the ordinary was carried out in the early hours of Thursday.

The Ministry of Defence has a dedicated team called the Low Flying Complaints and Enquiries Unit.

However, a spokesman said: "We have no confirmed activity in that area.

"There was nothing odd or untoward going on in the Hull area at that time."

Earlier this week a report in the national media claimed a Russian Tupolev Tu95 Bear aircraft was spotted on Monday and Tuesday, flying in a Nato-policed zone close to the UK.

A squadron of RAF Tornado aircraft from a base in Scotland was apparently called out to intercept the giant intruder.

In 2008, it was reported how a supersonic 'Blackjack' Russian jet flew completely undetected to within just 20 miles from Hull.

However, a military source told the Mail: "No Russian aircraft has ever crossed into British airspace without permission – despite reports in the media."

Some readers suggested the noise could have come from Humberside Police's helicopter Oscar Nine Nine.

But a force spokeswoman confirmed: "Between 1.15am and 5.12am the helicopter was in Scunthorpe."

Mail reader Mike Covell posted a message on www.facebook.com/HullDailyMail stating: "About 2 o'clock this morning a loud noise was heard over east Hull, possibly further, and it appeared as though it was a large aircraft with decent sized engines struggling to gain altitude.

"What was odd about the sound is the duration, in that it appeared to be over east Hull for approximately 10 minutes. Efforts to gain a visual on the craft failed."

Another reader, Leah Simpson, added: "It was really loud in Hedon. Quite spooky."

“I live close to the North shore of Lake Erie, near Nanticoke Ontario Canada. I hear this noise many many times over the past few years and it drives me crazy because I cant figure out where it is coming from. It happens mostly at night, usually cloudy skies, sometimes during the day but cloudy so cannot see anything. Happens when its really windy or calm out. All seasons. It lasts about 10-15 seconds and stops, then comes and goes over a period of hours. I wish someone knew what it was. Its creepy.”

“This is probably one of these noises that will never be sussed out. When I was in the Royal Air Force in the late sixties I worked on early warning radar at RAF Saxa Vord in the Shetland Isles and RAF Buchan which is just south of Peterhead in Scotland. It was my job to identify intruders into the UK airspace. When one was identified as what we used to call an X-Ray fighter were sent up from RAF Leuchars and sometimes Binbrook to intercept and identify the intruder. When the intercept was completed the fighters would escort the offending aircraft away from our airspace. This was a regular occurence at this time and there were many many incidents.
The Russian aircraft took off from the north of the USSR and were immediately picked up by Norwegian radar and their location, speed, direction and height was noted. The Norwegians would scramble their fighters and escort it out of their airspace, then the info was passed to us at Saxa Vord and we would scramble, after that they would be intercepted by the American aircraft from Iceland, then the Bombers would fly across to the Eastern seaboard of the United States and fly up and down that coast looking for weaknesses in their defence. Then the whole sequence would be reversed as the Soviets returned to their Russian bases. If the public knew how many of these incidents actually took place they would have been very worried, but it was never made public.
As for this incident over the UK I find it hard to believe that any Soviet aircraft would actually get into our airspace as our defences now are far superior to 40 years ago.We used to do exactly the same with our Vulcan bombers trying to find a weakness in the Russian defences so honours were even. I was listening to a guy on Radio Humberside saying how he had heard it and attached a Gizmo,as he put it,to his puter and said he worked it out that it was a Russian plane similar to a Hercules aircraft flying at 26,000 feet, what a load of cobblers as you would NOT be able to hear an aeroplane at that height!!!!!
As for my theory on the hum???? I think it was probably an East Yorkshire bus on Anlaby Road being left on tick-over so it was warm in the morning orrrrrrrrr it could have been my ex mother in law on a test flight, complete with cat, on her broom.”

“Its no secret now - so I can advise Mail readers that the Russians had Hull targeted for a 1 megaton air burst nuclear strike in the Cold War. The bombers do not need to be overhead. Our Vulcans, for example, could launch their stand-off bombs up to 50 miles from target. After 20 minutes flight, to prevent false incoming signals, they cut radio contact and proceed to target. There is an issue about our air defences right now - but a Soviet attack on the UK would be folly as the retribution would be the obliteration of St Petersberg within minutes. Moscow would be saved for any second strike - unless they hit London first. We have enough missiles ourselves to deter any Russian strike. The issue is more about a rogue attack by Terrorists and you can not entirley rule out the possibility that they could hijack a Russian military aircraft. Plan for the unexpected would be my advice. Shoot 'em down if they get too close every time, anywhere.”

“It was most definitely an aircraft. Specifically a prop engined heavy, slow machine Im convinced was an AC-130 Hercules. NOT RUSSIAN. Based in Wilts by our very own RAF and personally I believe it was a stunt to put the heebie jeebies up the British public into not allowing the coalition government into cutting resources in Scotland. The MOD are denying anything untoward in East Yorks airspace because they knew it was an allied plane and are not going to tell Joe commoner they did it deliberatly to prove to Cameron and Clegg that those RAF bases are needed for National Security.”
