Hundreds join second march to save Beverley's cobbles
Angry residents took to Beverley's streets for a second time on Sunday, in a bid to keep traditional cobbles in Saturday Market.
More than 400 protesters joined a march to County Hall this morning to hand over a petition signed by over 800 people.
The 'Save Our Setts' campaigners are opposed to East Riding Council plans to remove the cobbles. A previous march was held in December.
As part of a £2.5m renovation of Saturday Market, the council intends to replace the cobbles with block paving.

It will also cut parking spaces, widen pavements and create a pedestrian area around the Market Cross.
The council says the changes will make the area more pedestrian-friendly.
However, residents say a part of Beverley's heritage will be lost if the cobbles are removed.
Campaigner Shan Oakes said: "I have lived in Beverley for many years and I just think removing the cobbles is a desecration of the town's heritage, not to mention a waste of time and effort.
"What I want to know is why the council won't put money into things this area needs for the future, such as better provisions for youngsters."
Officers from the council are due to meet with the Beverley Civic Society tomorrow (January 7) to talk about the setts.
The renovation of Saturday Market is due to begin a week later on Monday, January 14.

“Polititians and councillors are there to serve their voters but they only seem to serve themselves and their interests. Do not let these creeps walk all over you citizens of Beverley, tell them to get lost. Who do they think they are?”

“currensy
We DID hold a meeting, the Council was invited and those responsible for the decision declined the invitation saying that the meeting should not have been held without prior consultation with the Council....500 people attended and most of those are opposed to the removal of the setts...that was the first thing raised at the meeting. The council do not listen to public views, they go ahead without proper consultation and those responsible do NOT live in Beverley, they just want to ruin it”

“Why dont the residents hold a town meeting and get some of the councillors to come along so they can see for themselves that what they are doing is not what the people who elected them want. And to you people who keep voting them in i wonder how many of your names are on the petition.”

“Sorry ynmr56, This isn't about the existing setts, this is about Parnaby ripping the character out of a town. For the record I'm a pram pusher and my friend is a wheelchair user, and neither of us struggle the way he says we do. He's a liar and clearly wants this work completing for his own agenda. Why, when we are crying out for social housing, pot hole repairs is this out of touch moron carrying out works that we don't want.

“ERYC are bulldozing the population into believing that removal of the cobbled setts is "maintenance" ..this is not true. Removal is NOT " maintenance" and is a huge waste of money, loss of character and gone for ever. It is also untrue that the scheme is supported by the majority, where is the evidence? There is plenty of evidence that people do NOT support the removal and loss of heritage and replacing the cobbled setts with coloured concrete. ERYC do not listen to the views of the public, they go ahead without Planning Permission under the pretence that this is maintenance. English Heritage and the Civic Society have the interests of the town, its residents and its visitors to heart and COMPROMISE is the only way forward, but sadly the Council are not known for compromise. Do not ruin Beverley Mr Parnaby, please.”
