Residents take their protest over landfill lorries to the roads
VILLAGERS are waging war with operators of an East Riding landfill site after more than 100 lorries thundered past their homes in a day.
Residents of Gilberdyke staged a protest to block off the access road to the landfill site and had to be moved on by police.

Now, Newport Parish Council and the residents are opposing plans to extend the site's operations until 2016.
Angry grandmother Brenda Cross said: "They're tipping at all hours and there's a terrible smell. It's driving me mental.
"They start at 6am and the last wagon that left on Tuesday night was at 9.50pm. I don't think that's acceptable.
"I can't believe they want to extend its operation so many more years."
Campaigners in Thimblehall Lane did a traffic count last Thursday and say the tip was visited by 116 lorries, including 90 HGVs.
East Riding Council says it does not limit the number of vehicles allowed to use the site.
Tip owner Glen Holt said: "I understand how they feel, I wouldn't want to necessarily live next door to a tip.
"It's busier than it normally is. Only last year, we had to lay people off. But the busier it is, the quicker it will fill."
Consultation is ending on plans to extend the operation of the tip.
The Environment Agency (EA) will also be asked for its view on extending the life of the tip.
Matthew Woollin, EA regulatory officer, said: "We are aware of odour problems at Gilberdyke landfill site and we are doing weekly inspections to ensure the operator continues to make improvements.
"The site is in the process of being upgraded and this work is, unfortunately, causing some temporary odour problems.
"These changes should make significant improvements in the long-term, but if anyone has concerns in the meantime about odour, they should call the Environment Agency on 0800 807060."

“Considering Haltemprice and Howden is the one of the richest parlimentary constituencies outside westminster and chelsea we get treated like junk.

And as for the trolls: This rubbish reflects bad on the holy city of Hull too. Whenever people drive to see you they have to do a mile through the suburbs of nairobi which have been put there by a guy who lives in Spain.
Sign up and get it BANNED they are going to tripple it's size in 5 weeks time.

“As a relative of somebody who lives very near the tip, I know that it is not just the smell that the residents are complaining about, but the constant 50 tonne lorries that pass close to their houses, which are ruining the road and grass verges, and more importantly posing a great threat to the many children that live and play in the area.
With the Easter holidays upon us, I hope that it doesn't take a tradegy to make something be done.”

“I have every sympathy with these protesters, i drive past the tip every day on M62 and it stinks not to mention the amount of rubbish that gets blown all over the surrounding country side. The tip looks to be full already how can they keep it open for another 5 years?”

“At least these 'country carrot-crunchers' are used to bad smells, with all the aroma of cow dung in the air in them parts. Why did they buy houses near a prospective land-fill anyway? A bit short-sighted (proving carrots dont work).”

“Mysti - I believe it's to do with Prevailing Northern Air Currents comming in off the Humber, if you go north of Hessle Tip, it also stinks!”

“This tip absolutely stinks when you are travelling along the A63 so it must be even worse for local villagers. How long has it been open? How did it get permission so near to houses etc?
Last question - Why is it that Hessle tip doesn't smell when you drive past yet this one ALWAYS does?”

“They get my sympathy, it's bad enough going past Wilmington tip on a hot day, never mind living downwind of a landfill. Though surely they can't call it a landfill anymore once the land is full. Trash mountain would be more accurate.
Build an incinerator, and burn the stuff. Sod NIMBYs and their misinformed objections.
Someone: "I pay my council tax, why should I sort my rubbish?"
Someone else: "I don't like living near a landfill something should be done"
Another person: "I aren't having an incinerator near me. If people recycled more, then it wouldn't be needed"
And such is a the vicious cycle.”

“And yet everyone whinged about having to recycle and recycling is the only way to deal with this problem. More recycling, less landfill. If you don't like it, push ERYC for MORE recycling.”
