Retail Therapist: Put a spring in your step
Over the years several of these columns have been devoted to footwear and really I make no apology for it.
It has become a bit of a female cliché (shopping, chocolate, shoes) but there are few women in this world who don’t look down at feet encased in a spanking new pair of shoes and feel a little frisson of excitement.
For me, it started early. I can still remember walking gingerly out of Clarks – aged about seven – in a much coveted new pair of burgundy patent shoes (that I had been sure were going to be denied in favour of a pair of sturdy navy pair) and attempting to walk all the way home without creating any evidence of a crease. They were so perfect, so pretty I wanted to keep them pristine for ever.
Conversely, in my shoe cupboard (my name is Lucy and I have a shoe cupboard. It is two weeks since I bought a pair of shoes) at the moment I have some very dilapidated, frankly falling apart sandals that I simply cannot allow to go to the big shoe heaven in the sky because I am not yet ready to say a final farewell. They are so atrocious I can never wear them again but we had such good times together those sandals and I, and I loved them so, so much, that I just can’t bear to be parted. Is that weird? Oh well, I am not harming anyone.

Anyways, I guess the point of all this shoe rambling is to come round to the fact that allegedly spring is round the corner. And although, having just come in from the coldest walk imaginable, I can’t yet imagine getting my toes out in the balmy spring sunshine, I have started getting excited about my feet emerging from their thick sock/winter boot prison and back into the light.
So what are the pundits predicting we will be prettifying our feet with this SS13? (spring/summer 2013 – but you knew that):
Metallic: Once only found on the feet of tap dancing girls and middle-aged ladies who lunch, the metallic trend for everyone is refusing to go away. Probably because the colour is just so versatile and can polish up even the blandest of outfits in an instant.
Perspex: Beloved of hookers and Katie Price (no comments here please), the problem with Perspex shoes revolves around sweat, condensation and a terrible slurping noise when you try to surreptitiously remove them under your desk. Stick to clear block heels (plenty on the high street) so you won’t look like you are about to go swinging upside down from a pole. I am unconvinced so far but willing to be converted.
Cage: Like an extreme gladiator (the trend that refuses to die), straps can go up to the knee if you fancy. Or you can opt for the softer, prettier laser cut outs that I favour. Whichever way, there is going to be a lot of foot on show so book your pedicure now.
Block heels: Channel your inner Queen mum with a sensible pair of block heels. Looks ugly as sin at first glance but I have a feeling the comfort value will soon have us all cherishing them.
Court shoes: Just to prove that old favourite never die – get them in metallic (see above) to spice things up a bit.
Because I am so kind and good, I will be buying and trying as many of these as I can in order to report back.
