Revamp of Beverley's Saturday Market ahead of schedule after cobbles row resolved
WORK to upgrade Beverley's historic Saturday Market is ahead of schedule.
In spite of a delayed start and bad weather, maintenance work in the town centre is making good progress, according to East Riding Council.

The first phase of work, which is concentrating repairing and improving the York stone pavements, is under way.
It is anticipated work on the footpaths will be complete by early summer, when the focus of the scheme will move on to the market place, surrounding roads and Market Cross.

Nigel Leighton, director of environment and neighbourhood services at the council, said: "Since starting on-site last month, work has proceeded swiftly and is a few days ahead of programme.
"The council is aware of the need to minimise disruption and has phased the scheme in order to mitigate the effects of these important maintenance works as much as possible.
"There is a noticeable improvement to the pavements in the areas worked on and, when the scheme is complete early next year, will provide Beverley with a town centre that will maintain its status as one of the country's most vibrant market towns."
The £2.5m revamp of the East Riding's busiest retail square was delayed because of controversy over the planned removal of stone setts – a proposal that has since been thrown out.
Contractors have started work on pavements outside The Grapes pub and Browns. That work is likely to take about three weeks to complete.
The contractor will then move on to the stretch in front of Café Nero and The King's Head pub, which will include widening the pavement.

“The footpaths needed fixing and the tarmaced middle area is a disgrace, but the sets? They were the only bit still in good repair, tarmac never lasts and is so easily damaged by frost, etc. it constantly needs maintenance. Hope they get that bit right, we don't need a repeat of the Hengate affair! Can't help wondering if Parnaby wanted the setts for his drive, anyone know if he has a long one? Drive, that is.”
