BEVERLEY: Rush-hour road closures are causing delays.

A collapsed wall in Keldgate meant the road had to be shut on Tuesday night and will still be closed today.

The closure adds to problems for drivers entering Beverley on York Road who are delayed by temporary traffic lights.

John Skidmore, head of streetscene services at East Riding Council, said: "An inspection was carried out by a structural engineer of a 4m wall adjoining Keldgate Manor and it was deemed to be at risk of collapse, posing a danger to the public.

"An emergency road closure was put in place at 7pm on Tuesday night and the council's contractor started partial demolition works."

The aim was to finish overnight on Tuesday but Keldgate remained closed yesterday between Eastgate and the Queensgate round- about.

It is not yet known when the work will be finished.

“It's not just rush hour, the increase in traffic having to go through the town via Lairgate to get back round is causing long queues all day. I can't see why they couldn't remove the bollards at the end of Woodmansey mile to allow traffic under 3.5 tons to go through and exit via Long Lane to the Minster end of Keldgate, as a temporary measure, or is that too logical?”
