Roadworks review wanted over Hull gridlock
A REVIEW could be launched to improve the co-ordination of roadworks in Hull after the closure of a main ring road caused rush-hour jams.
A senior councillor has put forward the idea after days of rush-hour congestion following the closure of the flyover in County Road.
-

The closure of County Road North has caused days of rush-hour congestion.
The gridlock has turned some routine ten-minute journeys into hour-long marathons, with many people ending up late for work.
The flyover was closed to traffic just over a week ago to allow engineers to carry out repairs to its main concrete structure.

The closure coincided with ongoing road work in nearby Bricknell Avenue and in Cottingham involving the laying of new underground power supplies.
Lane restrictions in Spring Bank West came into force today, ahead of next week's planned closure of Walton Street being closed for the duration of Hull Fair.
Now, transport portfolio holder Councillor Martin Mancey has asked scrutiny councillors to examine whether the programming of roadworks schemes could be improved in the future.
He said: "I am very aware of the frustrations caused by the recent roadworks.
"I take their concerns seriously and that's why I have requested the environment and transport scrutiny commission to look in to arrangements of the planning and programming of future projects to see if there are any opportunities for improvements."
The city council announced yesterday that work on the flyover was expected to be completed well ahead of schedule, providing some relief for motorists.
Instead of being closed for seven weeks, the flyover is now scheduled to reopen on October 13.
In a letter to commission chairman Councillor Terry Keal, Mr Mancey said a series of unforeseen problems had contributed to the heavy congestion seen in recent days, including a failure of the level crossing at Walton Street and two serious accidents in Ferensway and Beverley Road.
He said: "Notwithstanding that, I have been assured by officers that the works are urgent and that there was no alternative.
"But I think the level of public interest is such that there would be some real benefit in your scrutiny commission examining the way in which officers control and co-ordinate all works on the highway network, and the legislative framework within which they operate, particularly with regard to the works carried out by the utilities and neighbouring authorities."
But deputy Liberal Democrat leader Councillor Mike Ross said: "This situation was completely avoidable and the buck has to stop with the Labour portfolio holder.
"Lib Dem councillors in west Hull have been warning for sometime about what would happen.
"They were ignored and people are suffering as a result of Mr Mancey's incompetence.
"Local traders and residents have been in touch with me, angry about what has been allowed to happen."

“Martin mancey,Darren hale are on the board of KWL building services. No wonder these want to transfer council services to KWL so they can reduce the terms and condition ie so when the company makes a profit ,it goes straight in the board members pockets. Corruption stinks maybe HDM should look into this using budget cuts as a excuse to line there own pockets.”

“If the people responsible for planning are suppose to be managers, then in the real world (proper jobs) these people would of been sacked for incompetence! They have manage to increase pollution, grid locked the city and cost the local economy thousands.
Martin Mancey giving the politically correct reply as usual, teflon shoulders - 'not me gov, someone else'!
FARCE!”

“Not to mention the problems that Park St being closed is causing around St Stephens and as a result of the diversion the problems at the traffic lights at the beginning of Spring Bank, I just avoid this area at peak hours!”

“Transport has never been the councils strong point, but these roadworks really have put them in the moron hall of fame. Why not get this done during the summer holidays? No school traffic, less people at work? Doesn't take a genius.
That said, people need to help themselves as well. Hard to sympathise with people moaning about being sat in a car for 10 minutes to go a few hundred yards when they could have walked.”

"Cllr Ross has some neck, literally, it was his Lib Dem maladministration that left the road network to get into such a state. Their claim that the roads were one of their "6 to fix" on taking power proved worthless and motorists have been suffering the pot holes for years. Cllr Mancy sets about clearing up their mess and he gets called incompetent!! It was your incompetence that lead to this mess Cllr Ross. Perhaps you should be apologising to the people of Hull like your leader, Nick Clegg, has to the students"
Take your Liebour party politics somewhere else, we're fed up to the back teeth of all of you.”

“Only in Hull would you expect something like this to happen.
This council are an embarrassment to us all....
And who was it that decided Mancey was suitably qualified to do this job, and on what basis?
GET HIM OUT”
