NICK Barmby has laughed off reports of a swoop for former team-mate Robbie Fowler and maintains he has no plans to strengthen his Hull City ranks for the run-in.

National speculation has linked Fowler, 36, with a surprise move to the KC Stadium after a trial spell with Championship rivals Blackpool came to nothing this week.

  1. Robbie Fowler

Robbie Fowler is not on his way to the KC, according to Nick Barmby.

Barmby, who played alongside Fowler for England, Liverpool and Leeds, admits he remains in touch with the veteran striker, only to "chuckle" at the suggestion of a possible deal.

Instead, the City boss will keep faith with his troops for the remaining 13 games of the season and says any late movement ahead of the emergency loan deadline on March 22 will only come if injuries bite.

"Something may happen," said Barmby. "Obviously with suspension and heaven forbid injuries, then you've got to do something.

"But I honestly can't see anything at this moment in time.

"I've seen the rumour mill in Hull, which is brilliant, but it's a no on Robbie.

"He was a team-mate and I still speak to him but there's nothing in that.

"I had to chuckle when I heard it, especially when I got quite a few texts. Before I know it, people have seen him in a hotel in Hull!"

Should City need to strengthen in the coming weeks, the most likely area appears to be in defence.

Head of football operations Adam Pearson has previously hinted at a search for a versatile defender and former England under-21s international Stuart Parnaby could fit the bill.

The right-back has been without a club since leaving Birmingham at the end of last season but featured in City's reserve team win over Scunthorpe on Wednesday night as part of a trial spell.

League One side Carlisle have also been monitoring Parnaby, but Barmby says the defender will continue to train with the Tigers in a bid to win a deal.

"It came from a phone call from Steve Agnew who I've known for a long time," he explained.

"He's a coach up at Middlesbrough, where he's been training, and he rang me to see if we would have a little look at him.

"We'll take a look at him for a couple of weeks and see how it goes.

"We've had a few players on trial on good recommendations, from people we trust. We are pretty cool with it and we'll have a little look."

    Mannone
    Rosenior Chester Hobbs Dawson
    Brady Olofinjana Koren
    Simpson Ghilas Fryatt
    - now i dont care what anyone says about this but that IS a promotion winning line-up and i can't see why nick can't notice that?”

“Quite enjoyed this statement by Nick.....with added humour.
One thing for sure,he won't be conned by any greedy, grasping agents...in the transfer market he will only go for the one's he trusts and knows will do a job for the squad.
Like everybody else, I think we need a proven striker....but who the hell is out there worth bothering about.
Can't help but thinking about Liverpool buying Ian Rush from Chester years ago. Rushie was a prolific scorer for Chester in the lower league, and the question was could he perform at the highest level....well we all know he did,....a gample that paid off.
I believe that when Nick does splash out for a striker, he will be a good one.....UTT!”

“Simpson has had many chances to shine but quite frankly did'nt take them. He is certainly no better than Fryatt or McClean. In fact I feel Fryatt & McCLean are better players with much better work rates. McClean may not be the goal scoring machine everybody would love him to be but christ you cannot knock his commitment or effort. He quite often does most of the donkey dirty work which goes un-noticed, chasing down dead balls or putting opponents defenders/keepers under pressure trying to force a mistake.

To solve our lack of goals, I agree with 'NeilTheasby' in the most part, in that we need to be looking at strikers not playing regularly for premiership teams in an attempt to guarantee a decent calibre of striker/goal scorer as appose to taking a gamble on an old has-been or young buck who proves no better than we already have, but Simpson I dont feel is our saviour.”

“Okay - not Robbie Fowler - but to strengthen our attack why haven't City been looking to bring in an experienced Premier League or continental striker on loan - someone who appears surplus to requirements at his current club? In the meantime, I support JayneWacobs's plea to see Jay Simpson on the team sheet.”

“Give Simpson a go. He scored 4 for Millwall in a dozen games or so, as many as Mclean has scored all season”
