Run-down farm is now a dream home
Set in six acres of rolling countryside just outside South Cave, this month’s property is sumptuous and contemporary, but perfectly in keeping with its surroundings. Sue Mason takes a tour . . .

Drewton Farm, at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds
A dilapidated farmhouse stood where a stunning, contemporary home now stands in countryside at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds.
With six bedrooms, a gallery overlooking the magnificent kitchen and even an indoor swimming pool, Drewton Farm is set in six acres of greenery, where deer often come to graze.
“The original Drewton Farm was here and we bought it with a view to renovating and extending it,” says the current owner.
“It hadn’t been lived in for seven or eight years so it was dilapidated and the garden was overgrown. It needed a major overhaul and that was what we were going to do.
“Then we realised it was our one opportunity to build the house of our dreams, so we spoke to the architects and they said it would be easier, and better to start again.
“There was no historical worth, apart from the local stone, which we have used again in the outside of the house.”
The use of native stone, plus the informality of the grounds – lawns and paddocks rather than manicured rose beds – means Drewton Farm blends in with the surroundings; from the outside, you certainly don’t expect the slick interior.

The swimming pool area
“I really like modern,” says the vendor. “But we didn’t want to create a monstrosity on a hill. We wanted space, light, peace and quiet and modern family living.
“We’ve done things like a wide staircase and corridors to make it feel really spacious, and we’ve created different floor levels because it’s on a hill and also to add interest.”
No compromises were made on the specification for the interior, which includes underfloor heating and solid flooring throughout, bisque towel warmers and pebble tiles in the wetroom-style showers.
A long, private road leads to a gravelled parking area in front of the house, where the entrance door leads to a very spacious reception hall with picture windows.
To one side is a study and to the other, a door leads to the swimming pool area, where there is a changing room, shower room with twin showers and separate WC, plant room and a heated pool with automated cover, tiled surround and two sets of glazed folding doors.
Beyond the reception hall is a cloakroom/WC, and a boot room which doubles as a utility room.
A wide passageway continues on past the open staircase to the open-plan family room, which has French doors and a raised fireplace. “We spend most evenings in here because it’s so cosy, even though it’s open plan,” says the vendor.

Drewton Farm's kitchen is well fitted out
The very spacious (28ft 7ins x 18ft 6ins kitchen is extremely well fitted out. There’s a U-shaped island unit in white gloss, topped off with white granite, and a run of units in zebrano. The kitchen incorporates Siemens twin single ovens, a steam oven, microwave, induction hob, dishwasher, fridge and freezer. There’s a large dining area, and doors to the patio.
The living room is at a 90-degree angle to the kitchen (and so creates a sheltered U-shaped courtyard area outside) and has a raised fireplace and glazed folding doors to the south; a spacious room, it is perfect for entertaining.
A staircase leads to the first floor, where there are six bedrooms and a playroom.
The master bedroom has a dressing room and an open-plan en-suite bathroom, with a bath, walk-in shower, washbasin and WC. It also has a decked balcony.
There are two more bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms and three further bedrooms with fitted wardrobes. There is a family bathroom with bath, WC and walk-in shower, and a separate WC.
Also on this floor is a glass gallery, overlooking the kitchen, and a playroom with stairs to the swimming pool.
Outside, there are patio areas around the house and a triple garage and workshop attached to it. The gardens are divided into several separate lawned areas, beyond which are paddocks, with plenty of room to graze horses.
Drewton Farm is on the market at £1.4 million. For further details and an appointment to view, contact the agents Matthew Limb on: (01482) 669982.
