Sad loss of a 'lovely man'
The world of entertainment mourned the passing of Hull's own star comedian Norman Collier last week at the age of 87.
Norman had suffered Parkinson's disease in recent years and was living in a nursing home in Brough, close to his family home.

I lived near him in the beautiful village of Welton for many years. He was a lovely man and you would often see him on his bike going down to the paper shop or on his way to visit someone. It was a contented life he very much enjoyed. The eldest of eight children, he was born in Hull on Christmas Day in 1925 and once joked there were "five of us sleeping in one bed, thankfully I got the shallow end!"
Before becoming a household name on our televisions he worked as a labourer but turned to comedy in 1950 after a one-off gig at the Perth Street Club in Hull. It was his appearance at the 1971 Royal Variety Performance that brought him international fame and although he was best-known for his faulty microphone act and chicken impression, that was just a small part of his comedy genius.

Whenever I was lucky enough to meet him he would be surrounded by laughter.
Despite the lure of fame, Norman preferred to stay in this area surrounded by his family, who he loved dearly. Condolences go to his wife, Lucy, to whom he was married for more than 60 years, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all his family and friends on their sad loss.
THE Willows Club in Holderness Road, east Hull, is a busy venue with events and concerts being held for members on most nights of the week.
Its Deep Sea angling section holds special monthly concerts to help boost club funds, with the next, on Good Friday, March 29, featuring acclaimed comedian Mike Lodge.
