ONE of the East Riding's largest secondary schools is a satisfactory and rapidly improving school according to education inspectors.

Ofsted found that the 1,844-pupil Wolfreton School, which has split sites in Willerby and Kirk Ella, is well led and managed.

The very clear and charismatic leadership of headteacher, ably supported by the senior management team, and an increasingly rich and varied curriculum, are key strengths of the school.

Wolfreton's language specialism has enriched the curriculum and enhanced the school's links with partners locally and overseas.

Ofsted noted that in the large split-site school, the effect of new initiatives to raise achievement has taken time to be felt.

However, current development strategies are now beginning to make a real difference in raising standards and improving achievement further.

Standards are above average and achievement is satisfactory.

Students in the sixth form benefit from a good standard of education.

Ofsted found that parents are very appreciative of the good care the school takes of students.

Students say their teachers are 'always there for them' and are confident that there is always someone to turn to if they have a problem or issue.

Headteacher Dave McCready is pleased Ofsted has acknowledged the good progress made across the school since the last inspection in 2006.

Mr McCready said it is particularly pleasing that sixth form provision has been rated as good along with a number of other key areas including curriculum, leadership and management, the language specialism and aspects of personal development.

He said: "The report recognised that the systems we have introduced for self-evaluation, monitoring student progress and intervention are having a positive impact on raising achievement and as a consequence not only is the school well placed to continue to make progress, our development strategies are more than appropriate to drive this improvement.

"The inspection report represents a fair external assessment of the school's current position, clearly recognising our considerable strengths while highlighting those areas which require further development.

"I am confident that we will continue to move forward rapidly over the coming years."
