'Seals are eating all the fish in the river'
ANGLERS have met their match with some unexpected visitors to the River Hull.
Seals have been spotted eating fish in the river near the old shipyard in Beverley – about six miles inland.
Keen angler and Beverley mayor Councillor Ken Thorley believes the unwanted guests should be moved to save fish stocks.
He said: "These seals have been reported to the Environment Agency and we'd have expected them to have been removed.
"The seals have been taking barbel, which are a prize catch. I have seen quite a few chaps fishing down there and they have caught nothing recently."
Paul Cargill, of the Environment Agency, admits it is causing a headache.
He said: "The problem is the seals are going for the same fish as the anglers.
"The other concern is the fish aren't very oily and not as good for seals as sea fish."
But both the Environment Agency and the RSPCA have ruled out moving the seals.
A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: "Seals do sometimes come far inland, perhaps it's to do with the breeding season.
"They don't tend to stay long and will eventually make their own way out. People should just enjoy observing them, as they won't be there long.
"We would also warn people that disturbing, interfering or killing the seals is against the law as they are a protected species."

“most of the environment agencys money comes from sales of rod licences so fishermen should have a big say in what goes on with our waterways. if there arent any fish in the river hull because the seals are eating them the fishermen wont fish there so they mite not buy a licence less money for the agency if it happens in a few places the agency will have to cut bak wich means all sorts of things could go wrong. there are plenty of fish for them to eat in the humber and i think they should be removed or the natural cycle will be interupted the river and all other things that depend on it will suffer bigstyle for example they eat the mature fish there arent enuf eggs being laid so the fry numbers drop then things like king fishers will die or move on. when talkin about rivers there is never 1 way to make things better we no this from mans experience the more we mess around doing wot we think is best turns out we nakerd it compleetly at the very least there should be restrictions on how far up they are allowed to go. for all those who wrote anty fishing comments learn a bit more about fishing then judge people we fishermen are essential all over the world in having the knowledge and skill to catch and release fish for scientific purposes i never hurt fish and i am allways thinking ov ways to make it quiker and easier to catch and release fish. i could rabble on for ages but i think you should all remember fishing is a sport the well being ov animals should come befor our fun but without us this countrys waterways would still be in a rite state say what you want about us but we are the first to recognise problems with any river and we are the ones that never stop untill something gets done to sort the problem out. ps i caught a 31lb 5 oz pike not long ago and im still buzzin.”

“i cant quite believe whot i've just read from those idiots. as a regular fisherman of the river hull for the last 25 years. they dont know whot they are talking about. the seal's have been in the river for well over a year now . not being keen on fresh water fish is absolute nonsense they have destroyed the stocks of fish in the river including specimen fish including large roach bream barbel . whot would take years to replenish. even if they restocked the river with the seals their it would be like ringing the dinner bell. if salmon would have used the river the enviroment agency would have removed them the same week .but over a year later and they dont seem to care .i dont pay nearly 30 pound a year to be fishing while watching seals swiming past eating quality fish one after another . its like letting a tiger loose in a feild full of cattle . and you would probably get the same fools with their camerers saying is'nt it pretty . but i bet it would be removed becouse it dosent belong there .neither do the seals in the river hull they belong in the sea . its about time the enviroment agency could see this . all the anglers want is for the seals to be returned back to sea . if no action is going to be put into place fishing would be no more on the river hull and fishing in beverley will become a thing of the past . and the 'e a' and the council would be known as the one's who wer'nt botherd to take any action. your's very angry. chris spinks. 13 beaver rd / beverley .”

“How selfish can the anglers be, do they own the river?
As for our Mayors comments, go fish!”

“"Keen angler and Beverley mayor Councillor Ken Thorley believes the unwanted guests should be moved to save fish stocks." Impartial objective commentary there then.. and I'm sure there's going to be no conflict of interest arising.”
