Sgt Peppers Bar wins opening hours appeal
The owner of a city centre bar says winning an appeal over its opening hours is a "victory for common sense".
In January, Humberside Police attempted to shut the Magma bar in Chapel Street by applying to revoke its licence, claiming the venue was a magnet for crime, disorder and drug dealing.
During a two-day hearing, officers claimed more than 200 late-night incidents were linked to Magma over a 12-month period.
They ranged from drug-dealing in the bar to regular disturbances in nearby streets.
Ultimately, licensing councillors backed away from issuing a revocation order and decided instead to limit the bar's opening hours to 2am.
However, owner Peter Del Grosso immediately lodged an appeal, which allowed the existing closing times of 6am at weekends and 4am during the week to remain in force.
Now magistrates have upheld his appeal after he agreed new closing time rules for the bar, which has now been rebranded as Sgt Peppers after a major facelift.
Under the new arrangements, the bar now closes at 5am every day.
In addition, a £1 entry charge has been introduced after 1.30am while the doors now close to new customers at 3.30am.
Mr Del Grosso said the bar was also operating a strict over-21s only policy.
He added: "I think this is a victory for commonsense."
Mr Del Grosso said he had held informal talks with police and council officials both before and after the appeal hearing over the bar's new-look opening times and its overall operation.
"They have accepted the changes that have been made and hopefully we can all work together in a more positive way in the future," he said.
"We've not only changed the name but the whole look and feel of the place. I'm proud of what we have achieved.
"I also want to work with the local residents because they had concerns about the premises at the original hearing."

“What hold has Mr del Grosso over Hull CC or Humberside Police? He always seems to get his own way, doesn't he, in spite of the fact that he runs the bar reputed for the most violence and drug use in Hull....”
