Having the Olympics here has seen the demand for sports and fitness reach an all-time peak.

In the run-up to the Olympics, First Step Sports was going for gold.

We introduced our passion for the games with a schools project called 20for12, which was taken up and delivered to an astonishing number of primary schools in Hull and the East Riding.

The project gave the children an opportunity to take part in all the Olympic events as well as making mascots, learning about the history of the games, and a mini-Olympics to celebrate the final day. At First Step Sports we have a true passion for all sports and the London Olympics was most definitely the highlight of 2012.

Our aim was to run as many exciting projects as possible for all generations.

These included:

Sportivate BME (black and minority ethnic) Sports – funded by Sport England, the project aimed to develop opportunities for individuals from BME communities in the city to participate in positive physical activity sessions.

The project culminated in a football match between various members of the groups attending.

Active Gold programme – a project for care homes, rest homes and sheltered housing residents that gave them the opportunity to participate in high-quality physical activities.

The residents really took to the sessions and thoroughly enjoyed their experience, which gave them the chance to stay socially active.

The programme continues this year and will culminate with a festival at Costello Stadium in the summer.

Summer Takeover 2012 – for the second year running, First Step Sports partnered with Hull City Council's leisure team to deliver the Summer Takeover for eight to 15-years-olds, during the school summer holidays at three venues, Costello Stadium, Ennerdale Leisure Centre and Woodford Leisure Centre.

The scheme was fully booked all summer and the children really enjoyed their time with us – as did the parents who took advantage of some time off to go to the gym or for a swim in the leisure centre.

Leadership Training – another Hull City Council partner project into its second year, we have delivered Level 2 Sports Leadership Course and Day Certificate Courses in partnership across the city providing heavily subsidised qualifications for people 16 years and over.

The courses have been helping people who want to start a career in sport to gain the confidence and skills they need.

Many of the individuals have gone on to volunteering or coaching roles in clubs and with sports development.
