Silver lining of poor quarterly GDP figures
For more than three years the prospect of parking charges being introduced at currently free car parks within walking distance of traders' front doors has been looming.
An initial two-year delay in implementation and a subsequent qualifying trigger of two successive sets of positive quarterly GDP figures took the sting out of a protest campaign that briefly threatened to derail the last East Riding Council elections.
Now the issue has been moved into the long grass once again.
Unless the economy recovers dramatically over the next six months, it seems that parking will remain free for the foreseeable future.
