HULL artist Martin Jackson performed a selection of David Whitfield's best-known songs at Hull New Theatre last night, just hours after the statue of the late singer was unveiled outside.

The special one-off show also featured singer Diane James.

Martin said: "It was an honour to be asked to do the show.

"To be perfectly honest, I had never sung any David Whitfield songs until about six months ago when I was first approached to do the show.

"They are quite difficult songs to sing because they are nearly all big operatic ballads but once I got into them I really began to appreciate what a great voice David actually had.

"I think the statue is a wonderful way to remember him."
