Roads in Hull are clear this morning after snow showers blanketed the region once again.

A severe 'yellow' weather alert, warning motorists to be aware of icy roads, remains in place for East Yorkshire.

Gritters treated East Riding Council's 'precautionary network' twice overnight and some roads have been ploughed. The secondary network was being treated today.

John Skidmore, head of streetscene services, said street sweeping and grounds maintenance staff had also been out clearing snow from footpaths. Bin collections were not affected.

Mr Skidmore said: "The council is continuously monitoring the weather and will plan its weekend operations accordingly, in line with the winter maintenance plan."

No major problems have been reported on the railways this morning.

Sunshine may melt away the ice today, but the mercury is set to drop to -10C tonight.

A rise in temperatures is predicted for the weekend.

While the conditions meant a slow commute home yesterday, others took what may be the last chance this year to make snowmen and go sledging.

Snow and sleet made for dangerous driving conditions yesterday, with many main artery roads at a standstill within a matter of minutes of the snow falling.

The A63 and M62 were both particularly icy, with the area around South Cave snarling up from about 4.30pm onwards.

The A166 between Stamford Bridge and Fridaythorpe was closed due to ice.

But in the East Riding villages, youngsters took the chance to spend time working on their snowmen, race down hills on sledges and enjoy a snowball fight.

In Brough, friends Jessica Wickett, 6, and Aime Jackson, 6, were sledging down a hill.

And 7-year-old William Austin and his sister Rebecca, 4, helped out by clearing the path to their house.

Their mum Helen said: "The snow last year was horrendous, so when William saw it was snowing again this year he offered to help.

"But it can be a bit dangerous on the roads. We're down a small street, so it does get particularly icy."

Council gritters have vowed to work around the clock to rid the region's main roads of ice.

John Skidmore, the head of streetscene services at East Riding Council, said: "The council has been treating the precautionary and secondary road networks and our street sweeping and grounds maintenance staff have been diverted to snow clearing operations in high-pedestrian areas. Bin collection staff are out working as normal.

"The council is continuously monitoring the weather and will plan its weekend operations accordingly, in line with the winter maintenance plan.

"We urge all residents to stay safe during this spell of severe winter weather and for motorists to drive to the conditions, allow extra time for their journeys and travel on the main treated network."

Helen Chivers, of the Met Office, said temperatures only just crept above freezing yesterday, with the warmest measurements being just 0.9 degrees centigrade in Bridlington and 0.8 degrees centigrade in Leconfield.

She said: "The mercury has been hovering around freezing most of the week.

"There will be a sharp frost on Friday night, where temperatures will plummet again to minus five degrees centigrade.

"But there will be more sunshine on Saturday followed by rain and sleet on Sunday.

"Although predicting weather several days in advance is harder, there is a chance we could be seeing some snow at the beginning of next week.

"If it does snow, it will be earlier in the week, easing off towards the latter part.

"Over the coming weeks, while it won't be warming up dramatically, temperatures will be inching up the gauge.

"We'll be seeing a return to much more 'normal' conditions later this month."

“Out of interest, was "Mr Skidmore" his real name or one that was invented to remind us of the dangers of driving under icy conditions?”
