And Hull City's FA Youth Cup fifth round tie with Leicester, at North Ferriby, has been postponed because of snow on the pitch.

Met Office forecasters said the heavy snow showers affecting rush hour traffic across Hull and East Yorkshire would clear as the evening went on and turn increasingly to rain tonight.

A "yellow" warning of severe weather has been issued.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Accumulations of 2 to 4 cm of snow could occur temporarily at lower elevations, with around 10 cm above 200 metres, where drifting is possible in the strong winds.

"Snow will turn to rain from the west during the afternoon and evening, although there will be a short phase of rain falling onto sub-zero surfaces, mainly affecting routes above 200 metres, and leading to an enhanced risk of ice."

Temperatures will hover around 0C, but it will feel as cold as -7C.

East Riding Council said it would salt its main road network.

Hull City Council said its gritters had been out earlier and would return to the roads from 6pm.

Meanwhile, the Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for Bridlington's south pier.

The alert covers the high tide between 5pm and 8.30pm this evening.

Updated 5pm.

“Surprised there's been nothing on here about the motorists stuck on the A1079 at Arras Hill and the fact the road is completely closed eastbound. Also the B1230 is also closed at the A1034 junction for similar reasons (not that Humberside Police non emergency were aware when I phoned them!). Take care on the roads tonight!”

“So a bit of snow is worthy of a report, but the Mytongate traffic lights being out for several hours on Monday afternoon, leading to gridlock during the rush hour - that's not newsworthy enough for the HDM?”
