Temperatures are set to fall as low as -5C as the mild weather of the first half of January makes way for a big freeze.
Alexi Boothman, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, said: "Temperatures will fall over the weekend, and in many places, even during the daytime, we won’t see more than a degree or two above zero.
"From overnight tonight we can expect to see wintry showers arriving down the east coast, driven by cold easterly winds."
Hull City Council said its gritters were ready to deal with snow and ice and would work "24/7".
There are 420 new grit boxes throughout the city which can be used on any public highway, but are not for private residential use.
Councillor Martin Mancey, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: "The safety of drivers, pedestrians and residents is a top priority for us.
"We have a committed and dedicated team that work 24/7 to ensure the main traffic routes, pedestrian and shopping areas are as clear and as safe as possible."

“go down hall road the snow cannot lay down there because of all the energy cans , empty bottles, and empty sandwich cartons thrown down by the scool kids from that new school and all the dog muck on the pavement from irrisponsible dog owners , from 8th.av. to thomas ferens academy the snows got no chance.”

“Glossbunny, I'd say it's because their vehicles aren't suitable and in this day and age you have to have the correct licence/qualifications to drive the gritters?”

“So we'll have ...gridlocked traffic, buses running late and not going off main roads & the Council explaining why they couldn't clear the snow/grit the roads.”

2 out of 3 is not bad, yes they do the main traffic routes, yes they do some of the shopping areas, but footpaths are always forgotten. even on weather bulletins you hear them telling car drivers to be careful in the bad weather. For pedestrians the prime example is in front of the Hull Daily Mail building, the pavements are not designed for winters.
Might I suggest the reporter looks into refuse collectors, they are the first to be pulled saying the sideroads are too dangerous for them. Why can they not be utilised to grit footpaths? they are still on pay.”
