WE are delighted to be launching the new Mail Sporting Champions Awards 2012, an event which will celebrate and showcase the great sporting talent we have across East Yorkshire.

Following a tremendous summer of sport, and the huge success of London 2012 and the Paralympic Games, we feel the time is right to turn the spotlight on the tremendous achievements in sport in our region.

  3. Sporting sponsors Digital 370x555

The Olympics demonstrated the power of sport to both unite and inspire people in a special way, as we saw in Hull with the tremendous backing for Luke Campbell, Alex Smith, Ben Pipes and Lizzie Simmonds at the Olympics

It was fantastic to see the region so well represented at the biggest sporting event the country has ever seen, and we at the Mail know there are many more who could follow in their footsteps.

As a paper we are dedicated to covering sport at all levels across the region, from the top professional sides we have competing at the highest level, to the thriving amateur and junior clubs in their hundreds.

We continually see through the pages of the Mail, and in our specialist junior section Hotshots, that both amateur and junior sports are thriving, and being involved myself, I personally know there are countless people who volunteer their time to make sport available to all.

There are many true heroes and champions who deserve recognition for their achievements and dedication, and hopefully these awards will find those most deserving.

The awards are open from today, and people can either nominate themselves, or someone they feel is worthy of recognition until Friday, October 12.

The short-listed candidates will appear in the newspaper and on our website from the week commencing October 15, with winners announced at the Sporting Champion Awards, held on Thursday, November 8 and the KC Stadium.

We of course, would like to thank First Hull Trains, The Humber Sports Partnership and the Smile Foundation, who we have worked alongside to bring these new awards to fruition.

We also thank sponsors KC, Hull College, The Sewell Group, Stagecoach and Beverley Building Society for their backing to make the awards possible.

Finally, please shout about your achievements and get your entries in, and I look forward to seeing you there.

Neil Hodgkinson, editor.
