Sporting Champions Awards can put Colleges in positive spotlight
HULL Wyke's head of PE and sport Mark Lucid believes the Sporting Champions awards are the perfect way to portray Hull's colleges in a positive light.
Lucid is frustrated seeing Hull languishing near the bottom of education tables and feels the awards will highlight the area's sporting talent.
His sports students have done their bit to raise the profile of colleges with their most successful academic year.
Over 300 colleges entered the British Colleges Sport College of the Year and Wyke finished second to Gateshead, whose budget is over ten times more than Wyke's own.

Wyke also picked up the Yorkshire and Humberside award for a season that included six league titles from the 10 teams competing.
Their football team were runners-up in the BCS cup and their second-string netball team were the highest placed in the whole region.
Lucid said the Sporting Champions awards will put the city of Hull in the headlines for the right reasons.
"The Sporting Champions awards are priceless," Lucid said.
"Hull gets hammered for its education so it's great sporting success will be recognised by these awards.
"It's important we tell the young students they are doing a good job and the awards are a great idea.
"They will make a difference to students' lives and should get them more and more involved in healthy activities.
"Our motto at Wyke College is 'Work Hard, Fulfil Potential' and our students are doing that.
"The secret of our success has been hard work by the students and the staff. We are determined to increase the number of teams we have and already this year we have introduced six new teams.
"The number of students we have taking part in sport has increased by 25 per cent.
"We will be nominating our students for the Sporting Champions awards."
Amongst the sporting success of their clubs, Wyke have been celebrating individual achievements.
Footballer Louis Mobbs had a superb season and Lucid predicts a bright future for the defender.
"Louis captained England Schoolboys when they appeared live on Sky Sports," Lucid said.
"That is quite an achievement given the competition that exists in football with thousands of players trying to be selected.
"He is on the fringe of the first team at North Ferriby and a big future could lie ahead for Louis. I'm sure there will be more success to come for others too."
