Prosecutor Mark Kendall, speaking at yesterday's preliminary hearing, said: "Mr Hall is charged with the murder of his son.

"The defendant stabbed him three times – twice in the chest and once in the abdomen, with a kitchen knife.

"The defendant dialled the emergency services himself.

"He was in the bathroom and remained there until the emergency services arrived. His son was dead at the scene."

Mr Hall's barrister Louise Revell told the court she had not been able to have an in-depth talk with her client as he had been on the prison hospital wing.

She said: "The defendant has been in the hospital wing and I've not had any meaningful conversation with him.

"He has been on anti-depressants for 18 years and not had any medication."

A plea and case management hearing is due to be held in April and a three-day trial date has been set for June.

The Honorary Recorder of Hull and East Riding, Judge Michael Mettyear, told Mr Hall: "This case will be adjourned. The next time you will appear before the court is in April. In the meantime you are remanded in custody."

Mr McGlone, himself a father to young boys, was known as "Shorty" to his friends.

One friend, Karen Stewart, 52, told the Mail after his death: "I have known Shorty his whole life. Everyone who knew him is devastated by what has happened.

"He was a devoted dad. He loved his two kids.

"Shorty had his problems, but he was trying to turn his life around and get settled."

Mrs Stewart said she knew Mr McGlone from when both families used to live on the city's Greatfield estate in east Hull.

Mr McGlone's mother, Jude, is no longer with his father and has remarried.

"Jude is a lovely woman and a great friend," said Mrs Stewart.

"Shorty had been living here for a while after he had problems with his landlord.

"I know Shorty loved his mum dearly and Jude loved her sons to bits.

"She is just devastated."
