THERE are about 4,000 stillbirths in the UK every year and one in every 200 births ends in a stillbirth, according to the NHS.

Health experts say 11 babies are stillborn in the UK every day, making stillbirth ten times more common than cot death.

The NHS says the direct cause of the baby's death cannot be established in almost half of stillbirths. However, a post mortem could identify conditions associated with the death.

A stillborn baby is a baby who is born dead after 24 weeks of pregnancy. The NHS says if the baby dies before 24 weeks, it is known as a late miscarriage.
