HULL: Plans to limit the amount of student housing close to the city's university will be opposed at a full meeting of Hull City Council's next week.

The authority's cabinet has already backed proposals requiring planning permission to be secured for the conversion of former family homes into shared accommodation in the Wyke and Northern areas of the city.

Now students from the University of Hull are set to deliver a petition to the full council calling for a rethink.

Tom Peel, vice- president of communities at the Hull University Students' Union, said: "The direction would limit the amount of student homes in the university vicinity, forcing students and the problems associated with them, into other areas of the city away from the university.

"We have no doubt that prospective students would be put off coming to Hull as student accommo- dation would be situated in areas further away from the university with poorer transport links."
