Health and beauty store Superdrug has been fined £8,000 after a work experience pupil got his hand trapped in a conveyor system at its Beverley store.

East Riding Council took the retail giant to court for serious health and safety breaches following the incident in May last year.

The local schoolboy got his hand trapped in a conveyor system when moving goods from the ground to first floors.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service had to be called to the scene to release the boy's trapped hand.

An investigation by council health and safety inspectors found that the conveyor system fell well short of the accepted industry standards.

It was also found that store staff had not been provided with adequate training.

Paul Mears, the council's health and safety manager, said: "An accident was inevitable and could have resulted in a more serious injury to the employee concerned."

As well as the fine, Superdrug was also ordered to pay £2,649.98 costs following the case at Beverley Magistrates' Court this week.

“Maybe they should send the kids from Bransholme & Preston Road there, if they lost their hands they wouldn't be able to steal !”

“Poor Jon has it all backward again.

The question should be "Which school is going to send their children to superdrug for work ex. in the future?"”

“I bet there are still people who think health and safety is a good idea. This case shows the bad side.
What company is going to give work experience to school children anymore - definitely not Superdrug. You try and help the schools and all you get is aggravation because of some stupid child who shouldn't be sticking his hands in machinery.”
