Support for Castle Street upgrade welcomed

GOVERNMENT support for the long-awaited upgrade of Castle Street has been welcomed by city council leader Councillor Steve Brady.

Earlier this month, funding for preparatory work paving the way for the multi-million scheme to redesign Hull's busiest road was confirmed by ministers.

The facelift will see a new-look junction being constructed at the existing Mytongate junction which connects Castle Street with Ferensway.

Mr Brady said: "The long saga of Castle Street has taken a significant step forward.

"I understand it is now one of six schemes under consideration nationally with the hope that there will be determination and funding by 2015.

"This will, hopefully, go a long way to ensuring the most is achieved from the potential growth that the Green Port Hull project could bring."

He also claimed the port-friendly Local Economic Partnership (LEP) was another key part of Hull's future. He said: "An LEP based on tourism would not have cut the mustard."
