HUMBER Street's emerging arts quarter will be protected under plans to redevelop the old Fruit Market area.

The city council's cabinet yesterday agreed to start the search for a development partner to spearhead a long-term facelift of the area.

They also supported the release of £150,000 to support the growth of arts-based businesses in some of Humber Street's former wholesale fruit warehouses.

Councillor Steve Bayes, portfolio holder for regeneration, said: "We don't want the Fruit Market to become 'anytown' stuffed full of national franchises."
