ONE aim of the Apple Fest is to support English apple varieties that are at risk because they are not commercially profitable.

The James Grieve apple, for instance, is tasty and can be relied on to produce a good crop but it bruises easily. The variety was produced by the pollination of a Pott's Seedling or a Cox's Orange Pippin apple in Edinburgh some time before 1893.

James Grieve apples used to be grown all over Europe and were delivered to city markets via train or horse and cart.

Because the apple is no good for modern supermarket handling it is now only grown in gardens. The ones at the Apple Fest came from Walkington.
