A post office has opened in Sutton four months after a branch closed.

The branch in Ings Road, east Hull, opened earlier this week.

Paul and Jan Khaira, who are running the business, have received a warm welcome from customers.

Mrs Khaira said: "It has been lovely. Everyone who has come in has been wonderful. We are really pleased with the reaction.

"Even people who have not wanted anything have come in to say how happy they are to have the Post Office back.

"You often hear of them closing, but never opening again."

The pair spent six weeks refitting the post office, ensuring it was ready in time for Monday's opening.

"It has been chaotic and really hard work," she said. "People living in the area have been really interested in what we are doing and I look forward to welcoming them over the next few months."

Customer Claire Jennings, 36, said: "It is such a relief to have a post office again.

"We have either had to go to town or to Bransholme to find a post office."

The mother-of-two added: "I believe that every community needs the services of a post office.

"I am relieved that Sutton won't have to go without any more."

Former Sutton postmaster Keith Vickers and his wife Pam attended the opening ceremony.

For decades, Sutton Post Office was based in Church Street.

But in November last year Mr and Mrs Vickers decided to retire.

The couple had searched for three years without success for someone to take over the business.

Post Office Ltd had always promised that services in the village would continue as soon as possible.

Mr and Mrs Khaira have previously run a branch on Spring Bank West, in west Hull.
