THE TPS-77 was first developed by Lockheed Martin as a tactical radar for use anywhere in the world.

It is mobile and can be transported by aircraft or in two truck trailers.

Because it only takes two hours to set up or deconstruct, the radar is well-suited to short-term use overseas.

It will track flying objects at both short and long range, compensates for countermeasures and can be angled to look down into valleys.

It was brought into service by the Alaskan Air Command to reduce staff on 13 sites in the American state.

The radar top rotates to provide coverage in all directions and can operate for 1,500 hours without needing repairs.

Because it can be operated remotely, TPS-77 sites do not need to be staffed.

It has a range of about 287 miles and scans up to 100,000ft.
