AS MAYOR and Mayoress of Hornsea we were invited by the military to attend Private Gregg Stone's funeral on Wednesday, June 21.

We were very privileged to represent the town at the funeral, but it was a very sad and emotional duty to perform and one that will stay in our memory as such.

FAREWELL: The funeral of Private Gregg Stone, below.

We learned what an amazing young man and soldier Private Stone was and his family paid some beautiful tributes to him, even his little dog was there to give him a sad farewell. Our hearts really went out to his young wife and the rest of his family.

We felt really touched and proud at the hundreds of people who turned out in the pouring rain to pay their last respects to an obviously much-loved and respected young man.

Visiting one of our shops in the Greenway, Hornsea, later on we found out they had held a minute's silence for him, so thank you to everyone.
