THE opening of a new Tesco has signalled the end of a ten-year wait for a major supermarket in an East Riding town.

Thousands of shoppers visited the Southgate store in Hornsea yesterday on its official opening.

Violette Metcalf, 4, of Hornsea Community Primary School, was among the pupils who had the honour of cutting the ribbon.

She said: "I was really excited. I was picked because I won a design a bag competition."

Proud mother Karen said: "It does seem quite strange Hornsea having a major supermarket. The store is really big and it's great being able to do the big shop a bit closer to home. The petrol station is an added bonus.

"I think it will have a positive effect on the town as it will keep people in Hornsea to do their shopping."

More than 1,000 people applied for jobs at the new store and 170 people have been taken on.

Store manager Andy Dunn said: "It's great to finally be open and the response so far has been brilliant.

"We do hope to have a positive effect on the town and hope the store will increase the number of people coming to the town to shop.

"At the minute, there are no restrictions in the car park, so people will be free to park here and then visit the town centre shops."

The store is open from 6am to midnight, Monday to Saturday, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. The petrol station has a 24-hour pay-at-pump facility.

“What a disaster for TESCO so far. Although I wont buy anything there, been for a nosy and look around twice now. Both times absolutely empty.( Dont be fooled by amount of cars in car park, 50 of them are staff cars) Not one car in the petrol station!!! There were 5 tills with staff and no customers. When was the last time you saw that in any Supermarket!!. Remember a lot of these 170 jobs are temporary and will be reveiwed when the Store find its levels over first few months.
PS. Have you noticed everything to do with tesco is thousands " Over a THOUSAND apply for jobs " , "THOUSANDS flock to new Tesco Supamarket".
Next report will probally read. "Tesco loose THOUSANDS at New Hornsea Store which is a complete FLOP!."”

“it's a sad state of affairs if you need a tesco superstore to attract people to your town, but then again it is something unique! (must be at least half a days drive to the nearest one).
I am glad to see that tesco have created 170 jobs because all of a sudden there seemed to be many people leaving their current jobs, thanks tesco for taking pity on these people in their hour of need. Unfortunately as local trade has decreased the former employers cannot afford to replace the staff.
The town centre shops are not in the best shape it is true, but this is not the fault of the tennants. The buildings belong to a selfish, selfserving landlord who has messed the shopkeepers about for many years not renewing leases on the promise of redevelopment, hence the disrepair due to lack of investment.
I hope the new development attracts more people to the town centre otherwise we could end up vacant shops or a boarded up street like many other towns throughout the country making it a horrible place to live. I hope this doesn't happen. USE THEM OR LOSE THEM!!!”

“I appreciate your comments on shopping Linds01980. But now we have Tesco, and maybe there will be more development at Freeport. If the council are to take a more pragmatic approach in developing Hornsea it would be better to consult with local traders and residents, and not allow flawed research to dictate policy. We are lucky to live here and should take care not to spoil the character of Hornsea.”

“I think were missing the point.Supermarkets generally sell cheap petrol to attract people into their stores. TESCO cannot even get this right. From the outset they are more expensive than Morrisons and ASDA.
How can we trust them to be competitive with the rest of our shopping. No wonder TESCO wiped £5 billion pounds off their share value in 1 day last week! By their own admission they are falling behind with their competitors and they need to make changes. The only way to do this is increase prices.
Stay away get yourself down to ASDA or Morrisons. the savings are too much to ignore!”

    “@ Linds01980

By my reckoning my car costs about 13.6p a mile, which means driving to Willerby will cost me £2.70 ish, which granted is more than the £2.40 saving, but overall, I find personally that 60 litres of Shell Diesel lasts me about 75 miles more than 60 litres of Tesco Diesel. So the saving is worthwhile.”

“gassetta - I don't understand the 8 miles comment. Aldbrough - one of the places you site - is just over 8 miles from Tesco in Hornsea!”

“what a lot of you aren't picking up if you live Aldbrough, Flinton, Garton area, its a long way to Seaton, or Bilton, yes I too prefer Asda to Tesco's, but try having to drive 8 miles for fuel on a Sunday or in an evening, im glad Tesco's is open, the little shops will do ok ,Tescos is a good walk from Hornsea for a few things, the Coop will suffer, now that is over priced rubbish,”
