THE theft of flood defence equipment is not the first time an entire village has been affected by the actions of metal thieves.

In February, thousands of people in Thorn- gumbald and Tickton were left without phone lines or internet access after thieves struck in the middle of the night.

Copper cable from phone and broadband lines was taken.

A mile of cable was stolen in Thorngumbald.
